CLICK SPOILER FOR PICTURE!

Found
an add on Craigslist and tossed around buying it and well I did.
He was asking $180 and accepted $140, and had a good conversation with him and it was a great day.

The Blue hatchet is a Powermaster W. Germany I assume it's the original handle as it has the red epoxy or what not on top with no cracks.

The other Hatchet is a US American Fork & Hoe co. 1944 no idea on the leather sheath it has.

Axe above it is a Marshell-Wells Northern King, the handle has a sticker on it but can't make out what it says besides 'Firmus' I think.

The red axe head just has two markings one 'MI' and the other 'I' about an inch below it.

To the right the next one is a Champion Kelly Works. Some bad rust pitting but I might just wire brush and oil for storage until I have more time to mess with it.

The last axe head is EC Simmons ST. Louis. MO with a little circle emblem I can't make out with out cleaning it up. But this has a crack and looks like something very heavy deove over it and bent the eye and what not.

The black painted felling have just has 'M'
And 31/2 marked under it. But in ready to use shape.

The axe above it is marked us91 with a I assume WV emblem on the other side as after reaserch and the handle has Woodings-Verona on it.

The handled Double bit has no markings. I could take stuff to the paint on it looking for markings but it's in cutting shape I might leave it be until it needs rehandling then figure out what it is.

The Last double bit is a Keen Kutter with just the name engraved along with 'Made in u.s.a.' underneath it.

The Pickaroon is hand made and I put that handle on it that came with the lot since it fit perfectly. Was going to put it on CT 21/4 axe but didn't feel like doing all the sanding. I also drilled a hole in it and put a roll pin to help keep it seated longer.. I plan to use it for anything firewood related.

The shiny axe in the top right is just a Husky 31/2 axe from home Depot. I wanted to practice cleaning and polishing so used a cheap axe for practice and to practice leather working.

If any of you would like close-ups of anything just ask and I'll take some pictures

Whatever condition these axes are in you can be assured (for an outlay of $140) of not having 'lost your shirt'. If you seek 'anticipative/prospective drooling' though you'll want to post pictures of these.

You have to click on spoiler to see the photos 300six. It confused me too.

Sure, here's more photos of everything, in the spoiler.

Also sorry all just saw people where having issues finding the pictures.

Bummer about the E C Simmons. Do you know a blacksmith to befriend who will fix the eye?

Sadly I don't. But I mean if I want there's a Fab shop who can do it cheaply.... But I'm tossing around if I want to tackle it... Though I really don't want to chance ruining it. Fab shop might be the best.

another line of kelly axes,

ah, I get it now. No, though from my reply you probably figured out I haven't seen any.

A lot of stuff near me for sale has been Tru Temper or Sears brands. I was lucky with my current find but I don't usually see much that isn't worn down or extremely abused. But I'll keep my eye out and send the ads your way if you'd like.

TT made a great axe, and some old Sears / Craftsman / Fulton / Dunlap axes can be great as well, so you may want to keep an eye out.

Speaking of those my grandfather has an old Master Mechanic one he's cut the handle short on for Kindling that's turned out to be good. I had a True Temper Kelly works splitting axe I ended up turning into a Pickaroon. It was to badly worn to safely use and not enough left to fix it. But thanks again for the heads up. But if I buy another axe I was thinking of CT's pack axe or something similar. But with all the ones I got I can't really get excited about it. Before I got the lot of axes I was thinking of that pack axe and now... Unless something really strange or unique comes through I think I'm good for now... It's like when I got my two most recent knives I've just been "yah... I'm good now."

I'm surprised by the epoxy filled eye of the W. German Powermaster. The Swedes adopted this technique (labour and cost cutting measure?) for a short time during the dying days of their era of mass production (mid to late 1980s) but I was unaware that German-made export axes had also resorted to this (probably) at about the same time.

When I picked them up I was just like "sweet old axes I have something to do and use at my new house and work"

Now having owned them about two days and comparing to our shop Collins Axes I absolutely love these old axes. The Powermaster has split enough wood so far to run my shop stove half the day. The quality is awesome. The Collins doing the same work has to be sharpened a lot. The Collins is just a new hardware store axe.

No idea how old the Powermaster is but the handle is tight.

In the future if any of these handles break I'm keeping them to use as templates to try and remake them. Sorry to ramble on but now using old axes in great shape it's like my eyes where opened. XD

Oh yah I didn't take pictures but last night before I left the other shop I took 00 steel wool to the cruiser double bit. Nothing no stamps. But I figured as much. I also took a wire wheel to the Champion and Simmons.

All I'm going to do to the Champion is file down some of the edges around the eye to help in rehandling and maybe so a light touch up sharpening on it. I'll leave the pitting and just use it.

The Simmons cleaned up nice the cutting edges are in nice shape and still sharp enough with no obvious damage. The Circle to the right of the name is there but what ever was in the circle seems to have worn off.

from reading that thread I'd have to agree many better options. But if I do... Well it's like when a bought a Piranha knife. Not to beat up but just for a specific non super important jobs. Like the Northern King, besides the Powermaster have been my go to's so far since getting them and I absolutely love them. No the CT pack axe is pleasure purchase... But if I really want it I'll have to figure out how to get around the Buyers remorse.

I think the better reason not to buy one is that you can have fun creating something yourself.

You could probably very easily find a beat up woodslasher boys axe or other very similar very common head and turn it into one.

If you really want the pack axe then go for it because I hear it's a pretty good axe, but you may like something you make yourself more.
