That is extremely true. I want to start doing some smithing and what not when I move and get my shop set up. I have an old shopsmith and radial arm saw to get started.. but that is a really good point...why buy it when you can make it. Other benefit is skipping the issue of buyer's remorse.I think the better reason not to buy one is that you can have fun creating something yourself.
You could probably very easily find a beat up woodslasher boys axe or other very similar very common head and turn it into one.
If you really want the pack axe then go for it because I hear it's a pretty good axe, but you may like something you make yourself more.
