Hello:

I purchased my folder a few weeks ago and immediately made it my edc. Just this weekend I broke it while cutting up some thick cardboard boxes. The stopper pin that prevents the blade from swinging out past straight failed and I almost had a pucker moment!. Anyhow, I looked at the Ontario site but found nothing on warranty. Does anyone here know what that might be?, thanks.

Gonzzo.

cardboard huh?

Well, yes. I will admit that I did not see the re enforcing ring of 3/4 thick wood that was there to make sure the box kept its shape.

I did just send an email to Ontario so we will see. I wanted an opinion from here so I would know weather or no I should pursue a aim
Thanks.

Please let us know what Ontario replies. I just bought one based upon reviews. I may be sorry.
I would not have thought that wood would cause the knife to break.

Jerry

Sorry to hear about your RAT 1. How about some photos of where it broke? Both my son and I have one each and they have been great folders for the money. They are very sharp and tough. No problems with them so far.

Please let us know how Ontario respond to your warranty claim. All the best.

Ontario has taken care of my issues without fail. Zero cost. I hope you receive the same treatment.

Really? it must have been a defect.

I bought a few Rat-1's and 'destruction tested' one (hey... it cost 21 bucks) they are pretty good knives in terms of durability.

I see that Amazon has them in stock for about $36. I haven't seen them in stock anywhere for $21.. or even close.

I bought one off ebay for $26.49 with free postage. Have not received, but shoud get this week.

$25-$30 is a common price for the RAT-1 folder and it might be the best <$30 folder available today if you don't consider personal preference in the equation.

Give them a chance to respond. Since you have nothing to report except your concerns, see how they handle it for you before all that anxiety sets in. After all, it's a $25 knife.

I have had a couple of issues with Ontario products, namely scale fit on a RAT 7. Their response was immediate, and they sent me new scales and screws in about a week. I didn't email, as I figure that as any address that is left online 24/7, it takes a Spartan warrior to dig through all the spam.

My suggestion would be to go "old school", "retro", "medieval" or as the kids say today... "like they did back in the day". Call themon a telephone and ask for customer service. Talking to a live person can be weird in this day and time, but they have actual people there at the factory you can talk to!

Good luck. Hope they treat you well.

my son broke his Raider Bowie. An e-mail got no response but a phone call to CS and I was told to send it in. I asked to pay the difference on a swap for an RD-9 and they sent one no charge!!!!!

I received the RAT 1 today, along with a Sanrenmu 710.
The RAT 1 is too heavy, and the liner lock takes too much force to release. On balance, I do not like the RAT 1. It seems to be a heavy duty knife, but I would prefer other types for really heavy duty.
The Sanrenmu 710 is an OK knife and is solid. However, I do not like it nearly as well as my Kershaw OSO Sweet. It is a keeper, however. I thought about buying another for a spare, but after having seen it I won't do that.

On balance I am finding I do not care for the tactical type knives as well as the traditional folders. These newer knives deploy much faster, but that is not any advantage for me. I sure do not intend to fight with a knife.

I like the OSOS, and will continue to carry it, but probably would not replace it with a similar knife if it broke.

I have a Rat-1, it seems really solid. Can you describe for us how you were holding it and pushing it through the 3/4" wood when it broke? Were you batoning it or just pushing the handle with your hand? Both hands? Were you cutting with or against the grain of the wood? Thank you in advance for any details you can add to help our understanding.

Update:

Sorry it took so long to get back on this thread. I was contacted by customer service and was simply told to ship it to them, I guess the will evaluate it and let me know.

As for how I was using it, I was pushing down, with both hands on handle, cutting the box(box aprox 3/4in. Thick cardboard)near the bottom of the box was a re-enforcing ring made out of 3/4in thick "soft" wood. I was going down and had a good amount of weight and momentum behind the handle.

I will post results as they come in. I will ship the knife Monday.

Thanks all.

Gonzzo.

Gonzzo.

In most cases when asked to recommend a knife the recommendation is for a folding knife. While some evidently are very rugged, a fixed blade would be stronger for survival use where batonning would be necessary. However I would have to say that the RAT 1 should have stood up to the use you put it to. So it will be very interesting to see what Ontario says about it.
Your experience indicates that a fixed blade is much better for a survival type knife. Maybe also to cut boxes?:D
