I was sharpening a wooden garden stake today, putting a fair amount of downward pressure on the knife when all of the sudden there was no pressure. Because the blade broke in the middle of the serrations. I have used the knife hard everyday for two and a half years. I don't blame Benchmade at all.
Most likely a steel defect, and I got OUTSTANDING customer service over the phone. I'm getting a new blade on it, and will continue buying Benchmade knives.

Yeah, it does sound like a defect in the steel. Good on Bencmade to send you a replacement blade, even more so now that the Rukus is discontinued.

Could be though to me it sounds like the steel failed through repeated heavy use. Even the best steel can fatigue over time.

That is awesome if they are sending you out a replacement blade free of charge. Hopefully they hooked you up with full plain edge. All their partially serrated blades I've seen were pretty dang rough.

Well I had a black coated part serrated blade, only because that was all I could find at the time. However, The rep asked me to hold on the phone for a second while he called "down stairs." He then informed me they had all four blade types for the 610 Rukus still in stock and I could have any type I wanted. I opted for the satin finished plain edge. It's like getting a new knife for 8.75 for shipping and insurance! I had to send the knife off, so I did that today already.

Would bet they take a look over the whole thing also - good deal bro. Always wanted a Rukus after handling one in 2005. Like a kubotan with a nice blade :)

The knife blade needed professional fitting anyway - nice! So what are you going to be carrying while the Rukus is DTM?

I have been carrying a Barrage or small sebenza to go with the Rukus a lot of the time. Right now I am carrying the Barrage. I am thinking about breaking out the mini onslaught though. time will tell.:D

I've always heard Benchmade had good service, and I'm glad it worked out for you. The only company I've ever had exchange a blade was Buck about 2 months ago for my 110, good as new.

Yep, could have been a small stress fracture or something for a long time now, and repeated trauma to the blade could have focused the pressure there. I'm glad you are getting a new blade!

I'm glad you are getting a new blade![/QUOhTE] This could be completely true. I did not baby the knife and even if you snap the tip off prying something a new blade only cost 25 -35 depending on coated or not.

I never thought I hear of a broken Rukus. I'm glad you used it hard and it served you well up till that point though. Also glad to hear (but not surprising) that Benchmade is taking care of it. Also good to know they still have parts (at least in this case) for retired knives.
I really wish they'd bring the Rukus back. Maybe someday...

Lastly I've gotta say that the fact Benchmade will sell a new blade for $25 is a major reason I favor their company. -Tip breaks, rust, excessive scratching, whatever, -$25 get you right back like new. You want some serrations, 25 bucks, you want to get rid of serrations, 25 bucks. Want a coated blade $35. And they usually replace the pivot, and pocket-clip too. And they'll let you keep the old blade if you still want it.
Emerson replaced a blade for me a few years ago for 80-90 dollars, and I thought that was resonable at the time (CQC-12). -$25 is a steal for some good steel.

I have two pics on my phone, but I don't think I can post them here. I can send them via text message or email though.
