I buy Becker knives because...

I buy Becker knives because I have worked with product designers and the folks responsible with manufacturing the designers' projects. Having worked with these different groups, I believe that Beckers embody the perfect balance between ungrounded designer dreams and the realities encountered during manufacturing (minimum material purchase volumes, manufacturing realities, market realities). In the end I get a beautifully made US product at a fair price that delivers all the performance that I expect.

Oh, I also like how they look.

Another thing I like is they are modern knives but unlike the rest of of the production knife market today, they don't have any "tactical" mall ninja silliness.

back in the early 80s.. i had maybe one hundred dollars to my name

i saw this ad, Campanion or Machax, they weren't even then known by the evil that came from Camillus "naming scheme", to wit, there was *known as* BK2 or BK4 then (because the Machax was #1 first knife, not #4 - feh!). just a choice of *two* knives. how ... freeing in a way.

so i made a phone call. knowing at the time, that meant *real money*. yes kidz, this was pre-internet, pre-unlimited-long-distance. it was a commitment. it was an **investment**

"Hi, Mr Becker. Well, I have $90. What is your advice?"

so went the phone call.

i bought a Machax. Guaranteed lifetime sharpening, service, etc.

Sold.

Here is that ad copy:

and yes, i retain not only the origial ad copy, catalog, and literature, i stilll have that actual knife.

so there.

they design and build knives the way I would if I could.

Heavy Duty, simple, affordable.

Because they are what they say they are - knives and tools that work for a living. They're not tied to some other ambitions or mystique of the designer or manufacture. You are paying for a quality working tool and you know exactly what its made of and that you can rely on it to do just about anything that any other brand can do.

I buy them to keep Toooj coming to our gathering each year so I can get them at show prices. ;) Just kidding, I buy them because they are awesome, affordable and produced locally, sort of. (I was just in Olean yesterday, and on the way back through Franklinville, I drove by the OKC building -- what a dump! :o) But seriously, I have a pocket full of green waiting for Toooj to help me round out my collection.

If you are semi-local and want to get some great prices on Becker/Kabar merch, consider stopping by on saturday. It's an open invitation.
