I can say that I wasn't warned - looks like I've been DPx'd: Vertical Blade Play

I was duly warned by several folks on this forum but based on the size, shape and specification of the DPx 2.0 I went ahead and ordered one.

I got it in March and it has only been in my EDC rotation (i.e. really hasn't seen much use at all). Sure I've sharpened it, I've opened boxes with it, I've even whittled some wood with it just to see how it coped and even then not much.

Now without the roto-lock on, if I shake it there is a rattle from vertical blade-play. It virtually disappears when I engage the lock but this isn't normal is it? It is of course significantly worse if I grasp the handle with one hand and the blade with the other and wiggle - then there is clear blade-play. This is my first frame lock so I wanted to double check.

For the record, I have emailed the company that I bought it from and will take it up with them and I am not trying to dump on the DPx at all. If anything I've really wanted to love this knife but I just can't accept that this is okay from a $200 knife. Please tell me that I'm not being unreasonable...

Ben :(

I think the lockbar just gets a subtle kink due to rotolocking and that's that.

The knife is now broken in and that's life. Personally i don't like this knife.

No, no dumb polls. I'm just glad that I'll be picking my 0550 up in early June!!

Just kind of disappointing when this stuff happens but we'll see how it pans out...

, do you think you overtorqued the roto? I assume there is enough travel to tighten it far past the seating in point. And i'm not 'blaming' you or anyone for this situation. I feel yer pain, maybe just lock the boy down and get a sheath for open-position carry? Just a thought.

Disassemble it and bend the lockbar in - that should fix it and the warranty doesn't matter with that bunch anyway so I'd just do it rather than making it a paper weight.

Good one Thomas :D

Hey Klute,

You can't over torque the roto-lock on the HEST 2.0 as it has a positive stop position moreover, I hardly ever used it so I'm not convinced that is/was the cause...

Thanks for the input though!

Ben

2nd suggestion. Get this knife to qualified personnel who can re-true the lockbar and from then on only apply the minimum torque.

Wow never heard of that. Had mine for a while now and this is not an issue for me. I'm sure someone will make it right, great CS from DPx at least, hopefully from your vendor as well. Hope this doesnt turn to a bashing thread.

Thanks Reeek,

I might try that in the morning (it is late here!). I'd rather keep it as I have reground the blade by hand to be a thinner profile so that it actually cuts stuff now(!)

I'll keep you posted.

Just for clarity - your comments about warranty; are you suggesting that if I screw it up further it'll be covered or that they don't really support the warranty? Either way, I'll try to get this resolved...

Cheers,

Ben

Hey Myker,

Thanks for your thoughts and I'm glad yours is fine.

I completely agree with your comment about not wanting this to become a 'bashing thread' as I said in my original post;

"I am not trying to dump on the DPx at all"...

I will try to get this resolved as I still really like the size, shape and materials used on this little guy.

Cheers!

Ben

Not sure what you mean. DPX has been pretty responsive to me with regard to warranty issues (admittedly it was for a new skull tool.)

Well scotchleaf, I get that in manufacturing things can go wrong and I am certainly not suggesting that the issue I have affects at HEST 2.0's. We'll just see how we go about resolving it, hopefully it won't take to long and will be an effective solution...

That said I do hear you re. Elan's. and none of my Spydies or ZT's has had any blade play at all. However this is my first ever frame lock. Hence wanting to check in with folks here - oh, that and to gather a bit of support and sympathy too! ;)

Cheers,

Ben

I had a HEST 2.0 that I got in a trade that developed slight blade play. I called their number and the lady that answers their phone was very helpful and sent me a new one. As soon as I got the new one, I traded that bitch for something else.

Peroni..
I hate to say it but I highly doubt that the warranty will cover it if you did a re-grind on the blade.
They may decide to think that the pressure you put on the blade and everything by doing the re-grind caused the blade play.

Your best bet is to try to bend in the lock bar a little bit.
