I can say that I wasn't warned - looks like I've been DPx'd: Vertical Blade Play

I'm going to go out on a limb and guess that DPx WILL cover it under warranty. In spite of the drama that went down here on the boards, I have consistently seen reports of folks receiving very good customer service.

Wow. A similar thread in the Spyderco forum resulted in a forum noobie getting thoroughly bashed.

This OP can post about his knife sucking before he has taken any action and no one has a fit.

Interesting...

And to the OP, I think these kinds of threads are perfectly reasonable. Why is it okay here and not in the Spyderco sub forum? These threads help us know about quality.

A comment made on the first page on the other thread basically said "don't expect perfection unless you get a CRK or a custom".

Thank you OP for sharing your thoughts. This is what a forum is all about. And sorry to hear your having problems, I have really wanted one, but stories like the one you shared have potentially spared me the trouble. Best of luck.

Unless you've taken a hammer to the titanium frame or attempted to chop up a pile of bricks with the knife, I guarantee that DPx will take care of you via warranty... and I am most definitely speaking from experience. Now with that said, "lock rock" can be easily fixed by slightly bending in the lockbar which will create more positive locking force between the lockbar and the back of the blade... again I am speaking from experience. If you choose to use DP customer service, Linda will most certainly get you taken care of but be advised it can take some time as all of the repair work is done at the factory in Italy... I had a limited edition Mr. DP HEST/f that they chose to completely replace, so they hand built me a completely new limited edition knife. There may well be better knives that you can buy, but you will be hard pressed to find better customer service than what you'll get from DPx.

Hope this helps.

Hey TriviaMonster, if I may I'm not trying to say that the HEST "sucks", in fact I really like this knife as stated for it's size, specs, etc. I just wanted to confirm my thoughts about the frame lock AFTER I contacted the store where I bought this knife. I know it is a minor point and it isn't a big deal. I also get that you are okay reading this kind of feedback but do please keep this in context regarding your own possibe purchase. As others have mentioned already in this thread, some folks have had no issues. Others have had them fixed/replaced under warranty.

Again that was something I was looking for reassurance of by making my original post.

I also really appreciate your best wishes for a solution! Thanks...

Dustyzz, great to hear that you were well taken care of. Thanks for the input and the heads up regarding the potential length of time it may take if it does go back...

Cheers all!

Ben

Disassemble it and bend the lockbar in - that should fix it and the warranty doesn't matter with that bunch anyway so I'd just do it rather than making it a paper weight.

Good one Thomas :D

I have to ask so I'm clear. What do you mean by "the warranty doesn't matter with that bunch." {?} Thanks

They sent me a brand new hest 2.0 after I bought a broke hest 1.0 on the exchange no question asked. they say they have a no questions asked warranty, my brand new 2.0 got lock rock in like 2 or 3 days so I sent it back off got another brand new one and traded it off for a zt 551. I suggest send it off, get you a new one don't even open it and put it on the exchange for sale or trade for a zt 550, you won't be disappointed

Isn't that a bit how some people treat hipoints? raving about the companies great customer service in the face of issues about their products.

Hipoints? Sorry--maybe because I just work up from a Sunday nap but I don't know what you're talking about. :o But yeah DPx has had some bizarre QC issues since their rocky start with the first production run. I like the knives in concept and it's good that they'll take care of you if something goes wrong, but it seems issues crop up way too frequently for knives in their price range. I can understand and even expect that with inexpensive products, but it's something that just shouldn't happen this frequently with a premium knife.

Okay so I promised an update;

Heard back from the company who I bought it from (who with remain nameless) without anything constructive other than an "its out of our 30 day warranty so you'll need to send it to DPx". Understandable but slightly deflating given the money that I have spent with them - that said I'm not sure what else I was expecting...

So, I took Reeek's suggestion and took the knife apart (not easy - the tolerances are extremely good i.e. tight and I had to use the gap for the pocket clip to leverage it apart. Same at the pivot end, gently prying between the blade and the titanium side) and then bent the lock bar further over.

Long story short, whilst the blade centreing is now off a bit (without any actual rubbing) the 'rattle' of vertical blade-play seems to have gone.

Overall it was slightly disappointing to have to do this to a knife of this value but I'm glad to keep it and be able to use it without sending it back (at the moment) especially given all the work I put in on the blade.

I should also explain that I did all the blade geometry reprofiling by hand on waterstones so I can't imaging that it caused torque in the blade in any way which would cause the blade-play. Either way, I'm happy to have a usable, solid DPx in my possession.

Thanks all for your thoughts, input and support - especially to Reeek for suggest the solution! :)

Cheers all...

Ben

If the DPX forum was still going, it might be different...

This guy is trying his best to be reasonable and agreeable. RainbowCanyons spent the entire thread bitching and whining and feeling sorry for himself.

I wanted one so bad until they hit the market with instant problems.
I would not wanna jack with the lockbar unless I had some real knowledge/experience with doing so.
It could make it weaker down the road.
The DPx folders are notorious for lockup problems and I would expect most of them to develop sooner or later.
Id sell it.

Thanks Pseudonym, I am indeed trying to be reasonable...

HuntBomb, I have to say that I'm fully intending to hang on to this knife. I've said it several times in this tread but the specs on this little guy work for me. It is very pocketable and punches above it's weight. Also, I'd hate to sell on an issue to someone else.

I'll happily monitor it throughout my useage and if necessary will send it back but so far my lock bar adjustment seems to have done the trick.

Cheers,

Ben

The repositioning of the lockbar should shore up the lock up for a good amount of time. I can't however, predict what would happen if you used it hard with a lot of force.

I'm delighted you got the lockup part resolved for now though :)

The problem with the HEST/F 2.0 is that there is a lot of distrust in their F&F, function and aptitude so everyone is on the lookout, especially for the street price point.

As long as the MFG takes care of you, I supposed any knife is worth a shot if one is compelled to own it and check it out.

Enjoy for now!
