I CANNOT Decide Which to Buy

I have two of the 3550 and I really like them. I am a fan of that blade desing. Benchmades tend not to deploy as fast or with as much snap as my Protechs but they are nice knives.

Have you held both? I cannot attest to the SOGS build or reliability. By looks alone I still would take the 3550.

I'd go with the Benchmade, with me it's a matter of aesthetics. SOG knives have their name on the scales as well as the clip. It makes the knife cheap looking, in my opinion. (not trying to start a war here, it's a personal preference as are all knife decisions!)

With the white writing and cutouts on the clip, it's going to stand out more than the plain black clip of the Benchmade.

Of course the SOG knife is cheaper, but if you're looking at an auto, price is probably not your number one concern.

Never held a sog folder that didnt have blade play like crazy, plus you should never pay that much for AUS-8. Go BM for sure.

SOG is pretty much all but hated on this forum. They're quality control is sketchy at best and their warranty is all over the place. Depending on the day of the week or the time of day, they may repair your knife or not even entertain you sending it in.

Go with Benchmade.

I don't think you should pay $150 for a folder with 154CM, but that's just my opinion. ;)

I can't recommend the SOG. BM on this one.

Well, I went ahead with the SOG, mainly because it's more concealable.

For those of you that say SOG has QC issues, are you basing this on made in US knives or imported SOG knives? The SOG TAC is made in US, I would hope they have some high QC.

All of them.

Decisions like these deeply impact the psyche, and may eventually result in damage to self esteem when it's realized that the wrong choice was made - especially when pointed fingers and snarking grins surround you.

You should get a Sebenza, and avoid all that. :D

That aside, look at the blade and handle shapes. The BM is a droppoint with reversible grip - one that can't be easily indexed blade down, but can be easily used blade up. The SOG is more specific, blade down, and the tip won't be as useful if you intend it for slipping under belting, etc. It will snag more.

With that in mind, what will you use it for more often - down only, or with some cuts blade up? The centered drop point, or the clipped and more deeply bellied curve? The more versatile handle, or harder slicing requiring a better grip?

Shapes are specific, and the knives aren't meant for identical uses. Choose the one that best fits your specific set of needs.

By observation, I'd say the BM is a utility stabber, and the SOG a more western style field dresser. Looking at them through those descriptions might help.

Don't say we didn't warn you, IGotStabbed. ;)

Let's hope that your knife comes in perfect form without horizontal or vertical blade play. Let's also hope that should you ever have issues with said knife, that SOG deems it a good day.

how do you guys get auto knifes? are you in a state which allows it or leo/military?

You can get them from many knife retailers online for "Collecting" I guess, so no Mil. ID required. In PA it is legal to own and carry autos if the individual can legally own firearms.
