I CANNOT Decide Which to Buy

Oddly, your name doesn't instill confidence in your ability to handle knives... I don't know that I'd chance an auto-knife! Seriously, a knife isn't the best way to defend yourself, which you may already know if you earned your name the really tough way. In that case, I'd expect you to want something that didn't require you to be so up close and personal. There is something comforting, actually 'Special', so to speak, about a .38 or .44. I can see the need for an auto-knife backup weapon if you are either a LEO, military, or maybe even professional security - but not as a civilian.

Now, perhaps you just want an auto - because you 'can' have it - or are a collector. I'd get the BM - better steel, etc. Great lock. Heck, who am I kidding? I had a recent 'either/or' - it resulted in 'both' - probably your best alternative here, as they are a bit different. So, get both! Let us know what you think of them.

You can get them from many knife retailers online for "Collecting" I guess, so no Mil. ID required. In PA it is legal to own and carry autos if the individual can legally own firearms.

I've never seen a single knife retailers online which will sell to civilian (and ive searched!).

LOL, that just makes too much sense. You sure politicians were involved? I've got a concealed carry license but still can't carry a double edged blade.

You guys are all very against SOG. haha. I'll keep you guys posted when it arrives!

Not me. I've had and do still own a few SOGs, both fixed and folders. All of them have always met or exceeded my expectations and served me quite well. SOG's AUS8 is done very very nice and always come shaving sharp.

As far as play in their folders I can tell you that I've never had any blade play right out the box. However, I must be honest and admit that my Trident does in fact have some very minor lateral movement now. That being said, this particular Trident was my EDC at work for a while and it has been through the wringer. I work in construction and when I say used and abused, I mean used and abused. For the amount of hell I've put it through this is one tough and rugged little knife. Lock-up is as good as day one as well as the assisted opening mechanism. For the $70 bucks I paid for this knife I have gotten more than my money's worth.

Now I can't truthfully tell you about their warranties or customer service level becuase I've never dealt with them. But isn't the fact that I've never had to deal with their warranty department a good thing?? Also, when you see alot of people talking bad about this knife or that knife, always ask them how long they EDC'd it...or even if they've ECD'd it.

Anyway, that's just my opinion. Would I go with SOG again? You bet. But I'll also be the first to tell you there are definetly other options out there as well. Good luck!

Don't say we didn't warn you, IGotStabbed. ;)

Let's hope that your knife comes in perfect form without horizontal or vertical blade play. Let's also hope that should you ever have issues with said knife, that SOG deems it a good day.

I can attest to this. My flash 2 came with crazy vertical blade play. It is at SOG right now (or in the mail back to me) They said they could not fix it, that they only consider it bladeplay if the knife is falling out of the handle.

To reply to "johnny," I never even had the chance to use it. I took it out of the box and could hear the blade clacking around verticaly. I then sent it in after talking with the warrantee dep. lindsay was her name.

In Mo it's legal to collect - but the local patchwork of ordinances makes carry risky. Officer discretion in any one area may be confiscatory, yet the town next door may not care at all.

What the individual cities enforce as law will certainly supercede what they see as a state guideline. Arguing the point probably won't help - which is why very few of us bother to carry a switchblade. AO's, thumbstuds, holes, and flippers work better anyway, and certainly cheaper.

Well, the SOG came in and I have to say I am not happy with the quality of this knife. There are sever issues with this knife:

The thing rattles, and it rattles loud. There is a pin and the top to stop the blade at full open position, the pin is shorter than its housing and it rattles,- a lot.

Also the safety on it feels cheap, it doesn't have a satisfying "switch" when switched back and forth.

There is minor up and down blade play that can't be fixed with the pivot screw, it is due to lack of precision is the machining of the parts.

Pretty disappointed with this, it was $100, I guess that is cheap for a auto, but then again, $40 more and I can get a Protech. Looks like you guys were right, SOG is pretty bad.

I sell knives and I do like many SOG's. But I'm starting to see the light. I have noticed differences in the a/o from SOG before.

I have several Benchmade autos, and not to rub salt in the wound but that's what I would've went with.

But that aside, I still like the SOG Seal Pup Elite and SOG folders that don't use a/o and now autos. For instance I have a Pentagon Elite that is one of the smothest opening knives I've ever held! The blade has a beautiful look, it opens smooooooth and locks up very very good.

For some reason SOG needs to work on their design when it comes to a/o.

I love Benchmade locks and Coldsteel locks. H/K also. (benchmade)

Oh, I also have an H/K auto....it's probably my fav. of my autos.

Ha, and I must admit, I carry the SOG flash I, for my edc at work. It does great, and the AUS-8 is a pleasure to work with.

Would I trust it to stand up to abuse, no way. But it's light, small, fast to open and locks up good, and sharp...very sharp.

I have a SOG Topo contour fixed blade and love it. I agree with the majority here on their folders however....
