I cannot use option 2 when selecting a custom avatar

Option 2 is uploading a custom file to the site, ie the normal method. I was just able to do it, so what exactly were you trying to do? The site should be able to take any .jpg, .jpeg, or .gif and resize it so it will work for your avatar.
