I Can't Collect Anymore

By the standards of non-knife people, I still have too many knives, but I just can't see collecting anymore. My kids are getting bigger, we need a larger house, and the economy in general just is not as friendly as it was in the 1990s when I first got into Spyderco, Benchmade and all the other cool knives. I'll always love sharp things, but I think it's time to walk away.

I hear you bro ! I've been contemplating the same thing over the last year... I'm trying to save for our wedding , I'm trying to get caught up on bills , I'm trying to just keep afloat and there's just not much cash left over for buying more of what I already have. ( not to mention I do not get cost of living raises and everything has gone up in price )
I feel no obligation whatsoever to keep any knife related company in business , my concerns are for me and mine first and that is how it should be.

This year I have bought maybe 6-7 knives and two of those were used from forumites. There are a few more I really want but whether or not I buy them is up in the air... I have also bought quite a few flashlights but all of those put together were not that big of a impact , maybe $200 all told.

Yeap , cash is tight and this economy could go from very bad to code red any day now , storable food and water are our main priorities right now.

The best way to help yourself get over the lust of these wonderful tools is to get off the darn internet ! :)

Good luck Anthony.

as long as you've got a couple nice knives around you'll be okay.

I'm sure our economy will turn around soon, can't keep a good country down forever. maybe all of the fools who voted for Obama won't be so dumb next time :)

I've needed to cut most extras out of my budget as well. It is frustrating when you see something you really want for a very good price and realize you can't justify the expense. This is known as responsibility. A lot of folks expect the economy to go under soon. But on the brighter side, you have a gold membership and can sell some of your extras.

I have a real soft spot for Case knives, so, I have been picking up a couple here and there but am ready to get out of everything else - all other knives, guns and just general merchandise I have picked up. I tried to sell some knives on Craigslist with no luck at all. I guess the economy is that bad. I would like to sell about two thirds of the guns that I have, also, but selling them is a PITA. I'm just generally tired of "stuff".

The internet is not to much of a problem for me. My issue is that I only live 10 minutes from Grand Prairie Knives! I just have to stay away from now on. It is just too easy to go in there and buy something that was nowhere near my mind before I went through the door.:(

A non-knife person would say 2 knives is too much. If you really do want to quit knife collecting, you only *should* have a few things. A slip-joint folder, a decent size locking folder, a small fixed blade, and a large fixed blade. Those 4 will do 99% of what you would need a knife for. Just keep a "rainy day fund" aside for when you see a spectacular deal (like me seeing the Spyderco Q for $35).

I'll have to keep a small "rainy day or goody fund" because I'm sure something interesting that is cheap will pop up from time to time. If I buy, that will be the only way. I know I can't afford to just pick up new name brand factory knives except for a fair amount of Kershaws. The days of dropping $100-$200 on the latest Spyderco or Kershaw are just behind me now.

When you are ready to try other knives, you can sell off some of your collection and buy used. Other than shipping, it's sustainable.

Expecting our second child this month, any new knife will probably come from the exchange by trading. I don't need any more than I already have and am over my phase of buying 2-3-4-500 dollar knives. I like them but after spending a few thousand dollars on this hobby my most carried and used knife is still the $60 FRN Spyderco I carried before joining BF.
I still like to visit the forums though weather it's blades, guns, or automotive.

Oh man.... you're in deep. If I was in your shoes I'd be constantly broke... but I'd have a lot of knives ! lol :D

I hear what you're saying; I've been reducing my collection down quite a bit over the last six months. I'm getting it down to one box. After that, I'll probably stop buying altogether, except for the occasional (like once a year) deal, for one that's on my long term list - the ones I'll keep for the rest of my life.

Case just re-introduced one on my list that I've been wanting for years: the 6265 pattern, two-blade Hunter in yellow delrin scales and CV blades.

I've got more than I need, but I'm still open to exceptional values and stuff that fits my ergos.

trading forum! Swap old for new at no extra cost. That way you still have that "any day can be Christmas" feeling, without shelling out the cashish.
On the other hand I for one will be sad to miss out on your regular good deals for moderately-priced "for sale - production" pocketknives.

i'm in the same boat. about an hour ago or so i went through all my knives and just narrowed them down in terms of functionality. i'm pretty much down to 6 knives that i think offer the best uses. i don't have expensive knives, most are production slipjoints, the most expensive being my para 2(excluding my gransfors bruks felling axe which is in a different category).
i'm just kind of in this mind set where i don't see the point of having so many. a solid set of knives and axe would last me years and get any cutting job done. but we'll see...i'm sure by next week i'll be ordering more knives :D

Perhaps a middle ground is in order, Anthony. To completely deny yourself of an avocation that you clearly enjoy, does not further your satisfaction with life in general. Pay yourself first, set aside what funds you see fit and treat yourself to a knife when the time and price is right.

Couldn't have said it better. :)

Start going down that road and one ends up with NOTHING for themselves and I am not talking about just knives here. ;)

Been there, done that, got the t-shirt.....

I never understood collecting. If I don't use a knife, I'll sell it.

I figure at the end of the road, I'll have a small(10 or less) "collection" of custom-made(not just customs, but customs made to my specs) knives.

My Safes are ready to drop through the floor because of my addictions {knives & guns} and my pocket is full one day and empty the next and I am getting tired of it.!*
So before to long I am planning on getting my list out and keep just 6 knives (and all my Bk's) and sell the rest.! Wish I could sell them all to a collector
and get it all over with in hurry but nobody has any money. Then I could shoot the Computer and my cel-phone and get ready to dig a hole.
Am I over doing this.???? lol
