I recently have an opportunity to get one of ricks knives. I have always wanted one but I can't decide between the 3.5 18 and the 24. I will be getting a spanto flipper on the one I decide. But I really am so stuck in the fence between which model to get. The size of the 24 wouldn't bother me because most of my knives I carry are 4 in.

The price difference is a little significant so I suppose I'm asking is the extra price worth the extra size?

-i am so excited to finally be able to get one of these knives I have wanted since I began collecting. And I am even more anxious after handling a lot of ricks knives at eccks

For me, 4" is slightly too big to comfortably carry for such a beefy knife. However, I carried a military for a while and it was just fine. I thought the 3.5" was going to seem bigger than it actually does. So, if you are use to carrying 4" knives, you might think the 3.5" is too small.

I personally like the XM 24, that is my primary carry knife. I have pretty wide hands so the bigger handle suits me better.

Several factors in your decision, As for timing the XM18 is next in the barrel I believe so depending on your timing that could afford you time to save for what might be the one you really want. That said, I predict whichever you get - You will eventually get the other. I like your Spanto/Flipper decision. Don't worry about is the size worth the extra price - You have wanted one since you started collecting knives - Get the one you want.
If you like and are accustomed to larger blades (4") then there ya' go - Easy decision.:)

I unfortunately feel your have hit the nail on the head. I suppose either way I go the other will follow shortly after. Well maybe not shortly but it will follow lol. I think the xm24 might be the answer. Now the only question is what color g10 to get lol

You cannot go wrong with the XM-24 or the XM-18. It sounds like you are used to bigger blades, so start with the 24. As far as a scale color is concerned, be sure to have a look at Blue/Black and Pond Scum, which are my current favorites :)

Oooooo I like the pond scum look

I was never partial to blue/black g10 because I'm blue/black/brown color blind so those colors all looks black to me lol

SaddleSC, that blue/black scale is AWESOME... One of the more blue scales I've seen. I had one for a few days but it was mostly black with very little blue.

I'll add that there is no comparison between the Spyderco Military and an XM-24, they are very different knives despite both having 4" blades. The Military weighs nearly 1/2 of the XM-24 and the blade of the XM-24 is 20% thicker than the Military (the Military blade is even thinner than that of the 3.5" XM-18). Basically, the Military is much lighter to carry compared to the XM-24.

I'd recommend starting with the 3.5" XM-18. You can always strive for the XM-24 if you find the XM-18 too small.

And if I do get an 3.5" and find myself needing the 24 I would jot have a problem selling it or trading it. That's another reason I need to jump on this Hinderer deal. Because they are so easy to resell if I ever needed or wanted it.

But I have a feeling I will be holding onto it

You mention in your profile that your Favorite Knife is about the size of the 24 (The 24 is approx. 1.6 oz. heavier)
Length etc. about the same. No doubt the 24 is a subatantial Folder in every way, Good luck with what you decide.
No bad decision, and yes Most of us do end up with all the sizes at some point. :)

Thanks, Maprik! I really lucked out with that one. I have seen many of them that look nearly black. I am very happy with the way this one turned out :)

I have carried zt0300/0200, bm275, a naden knives about 8oz, military, strider SMF, crk annum, houge ex01, micro tech delta. I just woke up and know I'm missing more.even though I never need anything more than my BMW 530 95% of the time I enjoy the larger folders. RuviconSS I think you might be right still. I might wait a few weeks and just get what I really want the first time around

Thanks a lot. That size comparison thread makes me lean even more to the 24. I was hopeing the 18 was a little larger than a sebenza but I see it is just about the same size.

i will eventually try and get one of ricks knives and I think if i'm gonna spend that kinda money on a knife, i'd regret not spending that extra chunk'a change on gettin the 24, especially since you said you're fine with the size of the 24. just my humble opinion...enjoy whichever one you get:D
