Hey all!

So I know I've posted about Gerber before, and I know Gerber doesn't exactly have the best reputation. However, the design of the Propel Downrange AO has always intrigued me, and I always come back to it even though I know there are similar designs that may be better quality. I always find myself adding it to my cart only to delete it prior to placing my order. I think it's time to pull the trigger and just get it already! Am I crazy?!

OUCH!!

You are on a knife forum - of course you should buy it.

Gerber has been churning out some 'carp' for years. Good thing to inquire here, if anybody knows the quality of this particular piece.

I hope its better than a Paraframe.

Go to the emergency room immediately they can probably get it out.
:p

did you ever see that America's Funniest Home Video (I think this is where I saw it) where the two guys riding double on a motorcycle on the interstate got impaled by a pole sticking off the back of a truck; taken to the emergency room (the responders sawed off the pole and left it in both until they got to the hospital) and they survived ?

seriously though . . . heck buy it. If it is a frame or liner lock be very careful if it gets stuck and you get western with it to release it. A Gerber cut me once in that scenario.

Kinda' doubt it.

I don't know why, it's not really anything that great. However, if you like it, you like it. Who am I to argue.

You would be better off with a Kershaw Blur and some money in your pocket.

I find that most companies flag ship knives are almost always well worth it. I picked up a Rat 1 and Avispa this in late 2016 and I wish I would've picked both up sooner, just awesome knives. USA made gerbers if you like the look are well worth your time.

That knife seems a little pricey. I do like the blade design. Reminds me of the yari 2 and cfb

S30v, usa made, g10, plunge button lock auto... I say go for it. What variant are you getting?

I'll probably get the assisted version with black g10 and s30v. I have a Benchmade AFO II that is similar design, so I don't need the auto. Plus, I don't know of any Gerber dealers near me to send in the auto if it needed repair.

Perhaps the E.R. can help you with that.

I believe the pre-early 90's were decent for their time.I had a Gerber (LST I think, bought it in 88' ) that was one one of better folding knives compared to others I had at the time.I guess this was the before the golden years like now where new knife steels come out every couple years or so

If you want it and can afford it, why not? If Gerber wants to turn it around, I'm sure they can!

I had one for a minute. Not a bad knife at all. The G10 was aggressively textured (which I liked) and the assisted opening was nice and snappy. The tanto shape was useful and I liked that it was made in the USA.

You just need to be careful you don't cut yourself. These are known to have blade retention issues...even with the safety on.

Please elaborate on the safety issue...

I really like that one too, plus they have plain edged versions now. I really like the 06 auto as well, which they are also making in plain edge.

I'd check-in with Kershaw first. In my experience they usually have something comparable (in appearance and price) to Gerber. But in my opinion Kershaw is also usually objectively of better build quality. In fit and finish as well as materials used.

I really don't like Kershaw, personally. I've developed an aversion to liner and frame locks, and I have had too many torsion bars break at the wrong time...and when they do, there isn't always a good strong detent. My favorite knife is the Benchmade AFO II, and the propel assist is the closest I've found to the AFO that isn't an auto.
