I day out, featuring The Kid, and rain.....

Here is a picture of the first batch or Morels I found this year after I fried them. This was about 1/4 of what I got, I still have about 1/4 of them left, but they need to get fixed quick!

I used to pick poke for an old lady that lived near me, but I'm not much on wild greens, and I'm not really good at finding any of it compared to people that are good at it. People like chicken toe/tangle gut, ramps & poke the most, dandelions are pretty much everywhere (if they were worth any money, I could make a fortune haha), and people use some other flowers like violet to make light syrups. Catnip is another leafy plant that grows here. Morels are by far the best thing that grows wild in Eastern KY though. You need to go pretty high on the hill and walk a lot to find them this time of year, but they are out. They will be out even more in the next week, hopefully in lower spots. You really need a local that knows the area (and is an experienced scavenger) to show you the ropes. There are lots of older people with a vast knowledge of the area, you just have to find them - a lot of them will gladly share their knowledge, but a lot of them won't.

That's good your learning this stuff young, and you probably couldn't find a better place on earth for someone with outdoors interests.

Nice photos, MM. Great to see your "backyard". Around here, we only eat the dandelion greens, uncooked, in salad. If you want to try something else reasonably disgusting, fiddlehead (fern's heads) season will soon be upon us here in the northeast. Sposed ta be good for ya, but, yechh. People rave about them, but I think that's just so they can appear to be gourmands.

Thanks for taking us armchair geezers (speaking only for myself, of course) into the woods. Looks like fun, despite the rain. We're gonna have some rain tomorrow, but it's gonna be 40° so I don't think I'll be going out ;).

Hows your girls arm Mauser? Healed up ok ?

Hi Silverthorn

Sure is, healed up real nice thanks. Its a little bigger than her other forearm so she calls it her super bone. I was worried she would be scared to skate after that but it has not held her back at all. She is still kicking butt on the track every season.

Nice pics.
How do you like that esee 4.

I'm impressed! But I tell you what, Ethan can sure design a knife, the scales are almost to uncomfortable to use, but I wanted something more heavy duty than the bk16, without going bk2.....:D
