I did it again...ordered an RD NS 7 this time. :D

Its king of the choppers and I use it the most on car based thingies and not to have to haul it far outings and the old farm stead trail hacking.
So it's the king of the choppers huh. There's a lot i like about it. The size, shape, and 5160 are absolutely ideal, but the rubber handle W/ the pinky hook looks like it might be a problem. Also I'd like to see it uncoated with a full tang. The kershaw camp 10 has a nice shaped handle with a curve that likes to CHOP. Also, I think you said this sp53 outchops my Junglas. Does the curve really bite that much better? I did pick up some damage banging through a ton of dead wood with my junglas. I wonder if the 5160 would roll on me if i really put it through the paces like that. I ground/sharpened over most of the microchipping damage with a stone & a huge ceramic hone & put a convex edge on it. Do you think the factory flat grind with microbevel would hold up better than the convex? If i took a roll with a 5160 sp53, would it be easy enough to clean up? I like to use/ overuse my choppers hard, bit i'd still like them to have a fairly sharp edge with a little touch up hone. Is that too much to ask? I'm fairly new to this & I have a lot of questions but where better to get answers than here? Thanks

Yeah the Rat Tail tang is the only offish thing about it IMO. I'd love to see a full tang with exposed pommel and micarta handles. But the kraton handle does keep the price down for such a great blade.

But its weight, recurve and saber grind makes it one of the best designated choppers type knive/heavy machete class and especially for the price
I just use the standard factory edge after putting it through my Razer Edge Mouse trap honer, and the recurve I have to use a pull through sharpener, due to my limited recuve sharpening abilities. That's why I'm a fan of the SP-51 for main field use where straight edge maintenance is easier for me. But for car and old farm stead trail maintenance, the SP-53 chops the best chopping espeically against my RTAK II. Both Baton about the same, but the SP-51 straight edge is easier for me to set and baton with. For steel vs wood, the OKC 5160 steel is one of the best.

For other profile edges and such other people are more qualified than me to answer those. I did sort of did small chip one of my SP-53s but that was chopping the dang legs off the deer and it was cold and hypothermia was setting in, but that was bone vs steel. The pull through sharpener (I keep an eye on the carbide steel in them!) and the diamond honer got rid of them. Last year my SP-51 with its wider grind didn't do that when I did the same thing. Freezing makes one want to do things to get done and go get warm!

I want to see how my NS-7 will work on doing deer this year.

And now they are gone.

The one that was on a good sale price at the same as an RD 6 and such with the illuminated dots on the scales.

A few days ago or so they were still available, I was looking at getting another one for a friend, but well they all went poof now. The orange handled ones are still available for about $100 now.

I hope people got them while the getting of them was good! It is a useful tool I found.

Are you talking about the rd9’s now?

No what the great and wise OP who started this thread on. The NS-7.

The ones that were on "Sale." that is.

K. I noticed the 9 was going for the same price with orange handles($105) and thought you went back!
Shouldn’t have doubted th OP!

Yeah for that price they NS7s were, and the better sheath, that fits my RD7s was a good fit. Its bolo pattern and rest of the basic RD handle/choil/pommel combo was a great fit.

I did break up my RD 4,6,7, and 9 line of possession though... my little brother got my RD4 because I have other knives to do what it can do, and he can use it better and has more use of a heavy use capable blade to go with the RD 6 I gave him only smaller...like its great caping capabilities! I was going to give him a spare BK 2 I have, but I figured the RD Tanto would be better suited for the middling heavy duty all round survival/capabletodowoodsybushy type stuff knife.

So the seven and the sp53 are your main trail knives? Besides my 18” and 12” machetes, tomahawk, etc. I’ve only room for an rd9 with a tak piggyback, or a woodsman and fallkniven s-1.

7 with a buck 110 in pouch is take off the trails blade with the SP-51 usually away for a few days. (canoe trip usually). SP-53 is great for more closer to more trail maintaining and keep in car stuff. With black spruce and alder brush being the main trail problems, the heavier SP-53 or SP-51 are the nice short heavy machetes I need.

The RD7 covers a lot of jobs when doing shorter outings, the NS7 can do them to now. The blade length seems perfect to me.

Nice, got any whitewater by you!?

If one looks hard enough, some small rapids I shoot with a canoe (I use to swim in then when younger), or used to a lot till I got slowed own way to much lately. And past few years its become crowded on them water ways. I can go in the woods near town or a small river and not see as many people in the "wilderness." I steal my sister's canoe as she keeps at the old farm stead so it don't get stole in town.

It’s funny how even “designated wilderness areas” often have housing tracts built along the most beautiful spots!

What? We got bears (blackies) and wolves here already. :D

Bears give them a Wilderhoodie experience by eating them...er their food and the wolves eat them damn dogs they abandoned to run feral dog packs up and start attaching every thing that moves.

The eagles, owls and chicken hawks get them Rat Dogs besides the odd coyote.

State opened a new tourist preserve near by but they prepped it good enough with enough infrastructure for the new state park that its actually pretty to take a boat by or go walking in. They got the last of the wild lake shore and parkerized it so to speak so its sustainable and the tourists come in their herds to be culled of their cash at the local store and such. They are keeping the local grocery store open and healthy.

If I want to walk and some thing nice and natury, I go to the snowmobile trails that make great non winter hiking trails. I some times bring a buck saw and one of my choppers to clear some of them just enough for people and horses to get by and let the trail crew chainsaw the rest of the blow down. My RD7s were wonders at doing that to. And the NS7 is also handy to. Plus I can see where the deer trails moved.

OK...thought I lost one...my reason for getting things in pairs in case stuff like this happens.

But I found the NS7 today! Made me realize how useful they can be, I'm going to be swapping one set of handles with the luminescent dots with my RD 7.

When these went ~poof~ gone last month it pretty much surprised me when they had a lot a few days before hand. Guess people who saw an affordable great 5160 deal out there struck! There are a few non deal ones on the site, I'm just glad I got mine when I could get the getting of them to be be gotten when the gottening of them was good to get.

For how long was it missing? Any rust on the edge?

Nope, missing about a week.

Good. The orange handles are good for daytime location, the dots are good for finding with a flashlight, I guess. The only colors I have are dark/darker micarta. I would never find mine if I dropped it without knowing where, unless there was snow or I had weird good luck.

NS7 is a good knife, for its length I don't mind a FFG it got me thinking to pay through the nose for a NS9. With a 9.5" bolo type knife with a solid pommel might be worth it.
