No seriously,

I mean why buy $100+ folders? What do you even need folder for? Cut cardboards? I can do that with my 10 dollar SAK with little problem.

But no, I am clearly missing your POV.
Help me out gentlemen.

we like variation, and some, or most, of us are also collectors, we like blades, what can we say..? :)

Deep breath...shiny footprints....No Seriously, Welcome to BladeForums...

It's not only about cutting "cardboards". Here is an example, a bit broad but one I think will assist you in visualizing. Imagine a tool box, what do you see? Big screwdrivers, small screwdrivers, tape measure, small level, big pliers, small pliers, vice-grips, wire cutters, hammer, drill bits, wrenches (in yes, many sizes... ) etc... You have different tools for different needs. Sometimes a large fixed blade works for something, at other times a smaller folder is what is needed. It's about variety, some knifemakers consider thier craft a form of "art", if you can believe it - and we appreciate their craft, creativeness, and design ideas.

Let me ask you this - How many shirts do you own? Why do you have more than 1 shirt? Why do you have multi colored shirts that are in long and short sleeve? Why not just 1 single shirt? Are you then a fanboy because you own more than 1 shirt?

Clearly, you are missing the obvious, variety, collectablity, it's a hobby. Besides, my military can cut a slice of cake without getting my hands dirty...Can your little $10 sak do that? :foot:

i guess you fell trees with your mighty fixed blades? this isn't chainsaw forums

welcom to bladeforums.

folders are easier to carry without attracting alot of attention. also as said above, this is a forums about knives!

Can you open you open your SAK in under a second? a one handed folder is extremely handy for me when on the job and I need to do any number of random odd jobs. It may be breaking a handtruck full of boxes down, cutting a zip tie holding a fishing reel or gun label, or maybe just cutting a thread off of my jacket but whatever it is it is a hell of a lot faster than taking out my slipjoint and opening the blade I want with two hands. I'm not knocking slipjoints or traditional folders either I happen to really love them but for my job they are just not very practical. I want something that I can take out of the pocket, cut, and put back in the pocket as fast as possible to both get my required job done and keep the blade out of the view of my customers. Yes a SAK wouldn't alarm them as much but its just not fast enough for the many small cutting jobs I do everyday. Then you get into the different steels and their uses but thats a whole other thing. The main thing for me is speed and ease of use and accessability. I do however enjoy carrying my slipjoints/lockbacks on the weekend but I am NEVER without a good one handed folder.

SAK's are great knives don't get me wrong, but I would rather have a douk-douk, a Strider, or anything in between over a SAK most of the time.

edited to add: Lately my carry folder is a Cold Steel Rajah 2. (which I stabbed into the side of an old refrigerator about 15 or so times today to test the tip and edge, passed with flying colors, love this knife)

Because they are fun to play with:D. Fixed blades are great, but unless you are out in the woods, choppin up stuff, well they are kinda boring, to me anyway.
I live in an apartment, I don't even have a backyard.
Folding knives come in all shapes and sizes. I personally like to
find ones with unique locking mechanisms.

And all the other reasons everyone else in this thread said.

Unfortunately society (and the State I live in) is not very understanding when you have a fixed blade strapped to your side, and even though you will never find me without a SAK in my pocket, I regularly need more knife to get the job done.

Most times my only option for carrying a decent sized knife is a folder.

And, like others have stated here, I own more than one shirt.

Variety is the spice of life.

I EDC an Alox SAK Cadet, great knife that has tackled whatever I've needed. It is small, lightweight, and completely unobtrusive. However, as noted before, my other larger folders can handle larger tasks more easily. And I think the best point, at least on this forum, collecting a variety of knives is just fun.

To take this to absurdium, I told my wife she could no longer carry her pocket knife, a dimunitive Kershaw Chive, with her pocket protector, a Seecamp .32. She must carry a 'capable' fixed blade:

Obviously, I would never carry such a pair (I like revolvers!) - too much of me in my clothes already. Seriously, I did carry various fixed blades, BRK&T 'bushcraft' styles, in KSF sheaths - along with a suitable flashlight - until I talked with local deputies. It seems that 'in the county', the rule of thumb is that as long as you don't do yourself an injury when you sit, any pocket carry is okay - but it is a judgement call. Additionally, some municipalities outlaw anything 3.00" or larger. The pocket sheathed fb is left for a hike in the boonies now - EDC is a legally 'safe' folder. After all, a knife is a tool to me - a handy one, at that. YMMV.

I think many folks that enjoy quality folders also enjoy other quality items with mechanisms that are finely tuned and put together well.

I agree, its madness! The whole danged obsession is nutso...... every time I get a new knife I think to myself: where did this come from? What am I going do this with this thing, I paid how much for this toy?

Its crazy..... CRAZY!

And then I see the fools tooling around in $40,000 cars and I feel much better. :D

Well then enjoy your SAK and continue to miss out on the enjoyment of experiencing other knife brands, styles and designs. Your loss....;)

I do not know about you, but when I go to Church I sure would look silly with a sheath knife hanging off of my belt. I disagree with the ones that base it on pure collectability. I carry a folder that is well under four inches and somewhat hidden with its pocket clip. Try going into a bank with your sheath knife on your belt and see if you do not draw unwanted/unwarented attention. Face it a folder is just a handier choice to carry everyday and not a sheath knife.

That is such a simple minded question I cannot understand why it was even asked.

Common sense is meant here and not sarcasm or insult. Not meant to be recieved in a bad way OK. :)

I own only one knife, Sheath or folder, that I spent more than one hundred dollars on. And guess what it is a folder. It is one of Benchmades very large Axis knives with a very long and very high from cutting edge to spine. It is simply for camping. I can compact an otherwise kitchen knife, for this is the only description I can put on this knife. It does not have a name even, but it simply says "Large black handled axis knife" in the description area of all websites. Looks somewhat like a Bone Collector Model but it is not. Just a handier way to carry it to the campsite and use for slicing onions, potatoes and stew meat for the camp stew. Fold it and it takes up half the space, "right"??

And by the way some of the knives I covet most cost in excess of three to five bills. But that is why I do not own one "Yet" but I will some day. Rick Hinderer, Chris Reeve to mention two that I am sad to admit are my Idols. I just love a knive that is built like a tank, I love mechanical looking things down to the watch I wear, and some things I like for asthetic reasons alone. Like my Moki lockback folder with a belt pouch with flap snap. The knife has wood inserts inside a beautiful stainless frame. Look at Japanese Knives Direct and you will find the one I speak of. I paid less than a hundred for that one including shipping. It is very very well made and a Beautiful knife and I have not cut anything with it nor do I intend to. But this knife despite the great steel it is made with and the artistry is shows, I just want to keep it as a "show off knife". Now sometimes I wear that one on my belt to Church but I always have my favorite EDC to cut with not the fancy one on my belt. My pastor is a knife nut and we often do some giving. Some day he shows up with a pure silver dollar from seventy or eighty years ago and puts his fist over mine and says "this is for you" Mint condition by the way. The other day I gave him one of my favorite little front lock Ospery knives from AlMar. It is called giving your friend the best and not your left overs. But being disabled I have to be real patient with these things "buying expensive knives". But yes given the chance to own a hinderer knife (folder) over a benchmade top of the line I will take the hinderer knife. Simply because I love things that look mechanical and look and feel, and are, built like a tank. But thats me.

Why buy a Porsche or BMW? A Kia will get you from point A to point B and isn't that what cars are for? Transportation from A to B?

Why buy Ralph Lauren when a wallyworld polo for $8 will do just fine?

Why drop $75 on a bottle cologne when you can get some at the dollar store?
