"I Don't Get No Respect!"

I'd have to say one of the people that I miss around here would be

James Mattis...

...those who encourage your interests and/or those who challenge your views.

I could list about 30-40 people, but I will limit myself to three, who have been of tremendous help to me.

In Alphabetical Order:

STeven Garsson AKA kohai999

Les Robertson AKA woodworkghost

Dan Unger AKA Danbo

Although there are many I am grateful to, some already mentioned, how about your first respondent, Kevin Jones? Not only a regular poster, but he starts the most interesting and educational threads.

to David's posts, because I can't read them...but....

Phil Lobred...he lurks, but doesn't post....we have been friends for a few years, and he has taught me as much about the whole game as the next 5 people.

He knows how to build a knife(learned with Gil Hibben, for years), knows how to build a collection, knows how to promote makers and dealers, knows how to put on a show, and is a very real force behind what we know as custom knife collecting today...

we ALL owe him a debt, and he is so quiet and unassuming that you might not know he was standing next to you, if he was.

Also, Don Fogg, the only other man on the planet that I call Sensei....speaks for itself.

Best Regards,

STeven Garsson

Hi David,

Thank you for including me on your short list. We ALL have our short and long lists. I have enjoyed reading your posts and that you have withstood an early battering of opinions, to come out even stronger. You have MY respect. :)

I struggle to write even a few names, because in doing so I will have left out too many others who are easily as deserving.

That said, Gus Kalanzis hasn't been mentioned. We don't see him too often here, but he has my ultimate respect anyday, anytime.

Everyone else, too.... ;)

If I'm to pick one (and it's either one or a whole bunch) I have learned more from Les, both on and off the forums, than anyone else. But I have indeed learned from many here - and continue to do so.

Roger

I love the sometimes heated custom knife related (and sometimes unrelated)
discussions here on this Forum. Many a well experienced and mature collector and
knifemaker pick up every challenge and make reading every Thread exciting and
educational.
I am specially intrigued by STeven Garsson's whit, knowledge and experience
of many years, his many acquaintances and of course his truly amazing memory
for details...
I feel that in between the many subjects discussed back and forth, dealing with
everything that makes the world of custom knives tick so loudly, my small contribution
can only be a display of well depicted custom knives and detailed information
about them.
That is my world and I am glad to share it with you guys, adding here and there,
some color, shape and texture to the Forum.

All the best,
David Darom (ddd)

The people that I have learned from are 1. Daniel Winkler, 2. Steven G, 3. J. Fisk, 4. Kevin Jones, 5. Coop for letting us all know the secrets even though I still can't do it, 6. Paul ( bgspecialk) and last but not least John Hanlon ( who has forgotten more than I'l ever know.). Thanks for the whole forum (nuts and all) who give knowledge and entertainment.

Peter, David, and Chuck....I appreciate it.

I always say that it is a small community, and right here, in some small way, we represent the whole world in custom knife collecting.

This Forum does the community proud!

Best Regards,

STeven Garsson

While I may keep a low profile on the forums, I never cease to learn something from most everyone. I learn as much about people as I do knives and enjoy the variety of personalities.

The beauty of this forum is balance of opinion, I learn a lot, I wouldn't keep coming back if I didn't, but it is not one or two individuals that facilitate this, rather the interaction and discussion.

I seldom find my self in complete alignment with some of the more prolific contributors, but have had my point of view changed on more than one occasion. But, we need diverse characters and views to maintain perspective, but should not underestimate the value of humility also.

Stephen

RogerP, Kohai999, Coop, Keith Montgomery, Joss, Kevin Jones... I have to admit that I often leave a thread when I can't find a post from any of you !

We are some european guys reading that forum on a daily basis. Keep it this way, please...

Patrick

I would also have to say there are many names, but I seem to pay more attention to the opinions of the aforementioned. Additionally, I place a high value on the contributions of Keith Montgomery, RogerP, Kevin Jones, Peter(ptgdvc), Joss, the skills and knowledge of Coop, the media shared by Mr. Darom and the many knifemakers such as Don Hanson III, Nick Wheeler, and Ed Fowler just to name a few.

Now if I just had the disposable income to use the knowledge I have acquired...:D

Peter

David,

Thanks for the mention. I don't think I contribute enough here to merit it but I know you're just trying to butter me up to get at my Fowlers... :D

There are too many good makers, collectors and moderators sharing their time and knowledge for me to make a list but I'll give Steven a special mention for giving me advice and helping me get my wak traditionally polished and mounted. He's a character too and adds a lot to the give and take on here.

PS Kudos to the photographers who share their work with us...

Thanks for the mention MVF, Patrick, Chuck, Peter. I really appreciate it.

Seems the knife knowledge is so diverse here it's hard to narrow it down to just a few who I have learned from. Can't say if I have benefited more from questions asked or answers given.

The various views, opinions, taste and methods here sure make this an interesting place to hang out.

Thank you all.

I received / extracted more knife knowledge from Steven Garsson and Les Robertson than from anyone else.

Kevin Jones is also important to me, 50% because of his knowledge, and 50% because of his leadership wrt knife collecting.

Finally, I couldn't leave this thread without mentionning Nick Wheeler, who has been and is a great friend and has been most generous with his time and equipment (which nearly offsets the fact that I have been waiting 17.4 billion years, + or - 100 million, for one of his knives).

STeven,
You have earned my respect. For your expertise, and candor- I think most people admire that about you, though, it can seem harsh.
Sorry for the indigestion I've caused you over the years. My sensibilities are a work-in-progress.

Jose,
;) .. Yes, thankou. Please sir, send all thems Pronghorns'ies to me now.

Les Robertson, (to echo) has given some of the mos insightful posts I've ever read.

RogerP,
For his enthusiasm and passion. And worthwhile contributions over a long span, keeping these threads Interesting, and breathing new life into it.

I was reading archives in Google going back several years and found a conversation on an old forum thread. It could have been written yesterday, all the names were "regulars" here. It gave me the idea for this thread, (not Kevin's Budweiser commercial)..
funny.
Speaking of the devil.. Kevin, you too... Premier guy! The best of what these forums has to offer.

(I feel like someone should give out a prize for something.) Employee of the month?
David
