I don't know if I should be happy or sad...

Danged if that don't look like a black-handled 510. Source??!!

Ha ha! It's actually a 546-G that I modified to look and feel like a 510. I DO however have one of the Ray Mears 510-G's on the way. I have a slew of different Moras so it would be tough for me to pick a favorite. The Tram is a 12 incher. I also have a 14 but haven't tried it out yet because it is bone stock, and I have yet to find time to sharpen it.

These forums are notorious for making people believe they need an expensive blade but reality is just as you realized, you don't need to spend a lot to get a decent knife or tool.

Congrats,

All I really want or all I really need, well sometimes that is just no fun.

Oh, I need everything but this will do all I need? hmmn

This is so true! A good machete, a good mora, a good SAK and maybe a nice Opinel and all needs are met or exceeded for under a hundred bucks. There's nothing wrong with buying more expensive stuff, but they are not bought to cover the needs, they are to cover the wants.

I have splashed out on an ESEE Lite Machete - The Condor machete with the same blade was a lot cheaper but I paid to have the luxury of a micarta handle. I have 5 Mora knives - less than $70 cost, but easily worth much more, they are so capable without needing a mortgage to pay for them. I have 4 Opinel knives and 5 Victorinox SAKs - the fact that they were very reasonably priced doesn't mean that they aren't amongst my favourites.

For anyone starting out and having a limited budget I'd always be happy to recommend that they buy a Mora, a Condor or Tramontina machete and a Victorinox SAK - that would get them started for under $50. Even the co-owners of ESEE regard a machete as the best wilderness & survival blade to have with you and they are happy to recommend an Imacasa, Tramontina or Condor machete costing under $20.

Spending lots of money on expensive knives is fine, but it is optional.

y'all can carry all the cheap knives and blades you want, and more power to ya. :)

I am sticking with what I prefer, which is to say, a better quality blade. Better steel, better ergonomics, better handle material and superior function.

I could get by with a Yugo, but I drive a better set of wheels. :D
