I don't think I use a knife much anymore....

There is a difference between accumulating and collecting I think.
A collection has some sort of theme, be it material, locks, makers,... you name it.
So the knife becomes a collectors item first and a cutting tool second.
That's how I use my collection.
I do own some users too.

Yep, I collect users. ;)

This thread is perfect.
I was just feeling the same way.
My main issue, really is that I get bored.
When I get bored, I whip out my knife and "play" with it.
I open, close, repeat.
I also look really lose and check the tolerances and fit and finish.
Im either pissed at the crappyness, or enthralled at the small details.
Lately, I've been carrying my Vic. Pioneer, so I'm generally pleased with the quality.
(And I'm even more happy with the fact that it's beginning to get scratched from use. MY use. :D)
So, now I really like it. I trust it. Therefore, I don't wanna break it.
So I'm almost scared to use it.
But I find myself scraping with the screwdriver, prying with the screwdriver, screwdriving with the screwdriver.......
I mainly use the secondary tools.
But, it still gets used, maybe even abused sometimes...
Carry it all you can, and try to forget you have it with you.
Something will appear that makes you say; "Woah! I don't have a tool for that! Oh, wait! I do!"
Then you get excited, and out it comes.
The cycle will fix itself in time. :D

If you ever manage to wear it out completely just hold onto the used-up husk as a trophy. :D

I also find that, i have too many knives. Now, not in a negative way. In the, i need to carry a backpack because i want to use them all way. I feel like if i had one knife, i'd be forced to use that one knife, like when i was younger and didn't have money. But... that will never be a reality again lol. So many great knives.

It's definitely a psychological attachment. I went through it too. I came to the conclusion that there is not much in life that is meant to last a lifetime. For some reason people in the knife community think that knives should last forever. I've accepted that my knives will sustain damage in time, tolerances will loosen, blade play will develop, etc. I am now much more willing to use them for everything I possibly can. I purposefully DON'T get the right tool for the job, just so I can use my pocket knife and put it to some real use. What have I learned? Even the thinnest, pointiest blade can take more abuse that you think. They are made out of steel after all.

some I have for teh pleasure of how they are, some are specific knives[camping or cooking], and a coupleI rotate into carrying, depending on how I'm dressed. I do;t have any knives I really don't use too much, accept fr the collectors pieces.

Do you build ...or make anything?

Sounds like you don't, i can't imagine a life without building something. Not saying it's a better life but...
