I Dont Understand Lanyards...Why do you need one??

I put lanyards on almost everything without a blade hole ever since I started hanging my knives on pegboard.

I have a lanyard on my Bravo 1, a piece of orange paracord, helps with visibility, but also if I want to chop something with it, I can lock it to my wrist. Its basically to free ends of paracord with a cord lock that I can tighten around my wrist. I don't like braided fobs though, they get in the way.

I think the ones you attach to you belt at called dummy chains?

If a true lanyard loops around the wrist, what's one like this that's clipped to your belt called?

Actually, a lanyard is a piece of cordage that is used to secure an item to something else, be it your wrist, your belt, your safety harness or a lifeline. Its job is to prevent the loss of the item. A fob on the other hand, makes it easier to grasp the item. You can think of it this way if you like: you hold onto the fob, the lanyard holds onto you.

using a lanyard for legality reasons is confusing and the first i have ever heard of something like that. not trying to rag on it, but im shocked that there are places like that.

that being said, i do love the idea of a brightly colored lanyard on larger knives if you are in the woods, camping, etc. i have always wanted to do that, but sadly never have the time to go camping.

thank you OP for this post, i was always curious about lanyards as well

I put them on all my 3"+ folders. Helps hold onto the knife when doing wave draws.

I just bought a bunch of lanyards for my fixed-blades. Definitely for looks. And, yeah, I got the skull beads. :p

i have never used a lanyard because i feel that it is just drawing attention to your pocket. its saying look at me i have a knife and they seem that they would just get in the way as well.

looking at the history of lanyards
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lanyard
one can assume that we've come a long way in coming up with newer ways of securing equipment.
but nothing beats tied ends.
from horses to mighty ships, there's nothing like a piece of rope to hang on to.

I do not use lanyards, though I have tried. Just gets in the way and collects dirt.

I was wondering with a edc ,for example a spyderco, delica it's nice and flat ,I don't like using clips I feel like I am going to brush against something and dislodge it from my pocket, so now I have nice slim knife and a metal buldge , I would like to remove the clip and use a fob or lanyard or retrieval string. It could be kept in front rear or coat or vest pocket for easy retrieval . I am not talking about any type of defensive use.

I have seen a photo or video, can't remember, of someone using a "tiny tactical" knife, like a Spyderco Cricket, with a small loop lanyard. By grasping the knife and using left over finger(s) in the loop, they made it "more effective for self defence".
Not saying this works or not......

I keep a fob on a few knives because I like the look and I generally don't use the clip so it makes it easy to find it in a pocket.
NYC + pocket clip + Cops = Trouble. Sucks but that's the reality of it. Anyway here is one practical way it helped me out. My trunk broke and wouldn't latch, I untied the fob had a few feet of 300lb test paracord to tie it down with.

I dont understand why a large knife with a clip needs a lanyard attached to

it hanging out of a pocket. I think the lanyard isnt necessary. I can under-

stand why a knife might need a lanyard if its In Your Pocket without a clip.

Folks with and without lanyards feel free to chime in...Id like to hear why

a lanyard is needed and not needed. They may look cool to some...I just

dont "get it"..........

I have lanyards on many knives not used for work in wet environments. I often wear gloves when I work, and trying to fish a knife out of your pocket while wearing gloves can often be difficult.

I also use knotted lanyards to lock a knife handle into my hand for more security during use.

my Case XX, that i got when i was 9 and still have, had a lanyard put on it by the family friend who gave it to me. i would tie it to my belt loop to prevent losing the knife. after i grew accustomed to carrying a knife, daily, i removed it.

i haven't used one since and everything's been fine.

I have used some para-cord on my fixed blades when out in the bush. For folders i dont like anything that draws extra or unwanted attention to me.
