I just got a new Spyderco mini-manix and boy this is one sharp and solid blade! I am currently EDCing a nice Strider SnG but this Spyderco totally outperforms it in terms of pure cutting ability.

Can I get my Strider this sharp? Because I really prefer the ergonomics and design of the Strider over the manix.

Let me tell you, this mini manix goes through cardboard like butter. The Strider really struggles through it.

This thread should be moved from here, but if you like the mini Manix and SNG, check out the Spyderco UK penknife. Nice little Spyderco slipjoint.

You can get your Strider (or a great many other knives) as sharp as needed.

Check out a book called the "Razor Edge book of Sharpening" by Juranitich (I think that's the way you spell his name?).

Since I started using his methods, I have reached a whole new level of consistent sharpness, edge retention.

Good luck.

Sorry it took me so long to move this.
(Dang kidney stone has had me curled up for a day or so.)

I'm not new to knives but never went after a Strider. What is the grind? The manix is hollow isnt it? I point this out because you refference cardboard as a test medium. If the strider isnt a hollow grind (not shure if the non nightmare ground blades are hollow or not) it wont ever go through cardboard as easy as a hollow grind. Thats doesnt mean its not just as sharp though. If the strider just needs sharpened better I'm shure they can become as sharp as you ar capable of making it.

From what I understand, in order to make the Strider more slicing oriented you're going to need to trim back the angle and thin out the edge. Striders come with thick edges to retain maximum toughness- this of course comes at the price of slicing ability.

When I EDC'd a Strider (which I still do from time-to-time), I carried my other EDC- a Buck/Mayo 172- for slicing chores. Striders without a thinned out edge just aren't going to be as efficient.

Oh, and I think the Manix is flat ground, but again, the blade is somewhat thinner and the edge angle not as obtuse.

The stock Strider edge profile is designed to err on the side of ruggedness , consider it's intended use and users . It can be reprofiled any way you want it .

Ther are lots of posts on sharpning and reprofiling .
