I've really only become a knife junkie over the last 2 years or so. But I definitely jumped in with both feet since last december. So a few weeks ago I decided to join the CRK club by purchasing a pristine small sebenza insigno w/ micarta inlays on the exchange here. At first I was a little hesitant about the design and blade shape but wanted to try something new (I have some ZTs, Emersons, a Strider, Benchmades, etc.). Holy cow I was blown away. The blade shape is great for everyday tasks and the somewhat sharpened (is it a "swedge"?) spine of the blade is great for scraping some things without using the blade. The ergonomics are great, I'm loving the micarta inlays!

What really blew me away - when the knife arrived I loved the lockup, blade tension, centering, etc. but didn't like the lanyard attached to it. So i thought "great, I'm going to have to take this apart and ruin this things factory perfect function. Upon reading some excellent directions online I took it apart, removed the lanyard, and put it back together. This is where the outstanding craftsmanship really hit me because it was back to perfection! Wow.

So I liked that one a lot and started looking around on this forum and kept reading how "once you buy one, you buy more, etc..." and I didn't really believe it. But then, maybe a week or 2 after buying the small sebenza, an older, large sebenza popped up on another forum and it caught my eye, especially at it's price point.

It's dated from '99, has a BG-42 blade, and the blade has a swedge on the back side. I haven't seen many Large Sebenzas on here - or anywhere for that matter - with a swedge blade. It also came with an Orange G10 scale (which I don't really care for and I doubt I'll ever put it on it...). Overall its in great shape. The blade hardly looks used, but could use a little touch up on the edge. The titanium scales have some wear on them from being carried but again, doesn't bother me really. I think it's a REALLY cool knife.

Is there anything I should know about this knife? The previous owner said its probably a "collectible" but I really like the design for carry and use. I'm not one to keep 'em on a shelf. Every knife in my pocket spends time in pocket and I look forward to this one getting some good use.

I'm sending the large off for the spa treatment because, since it isn't new, but new to me, I'd love to get a tune up for it. The lock bar seems a tad sticky and the blade could use a resharpen like I said. I've been in touch with people at CRK and their customer service has been nothing but top notch.

So, yeah, I drank the kool aid....and had seconds :thumbup: How'd I do?

You did great! :D
In my opinion that is an excellent set and if you never bought any more, those would serve you well for a lifetime of use.

That's kind of what I thought. At first I thought buying a second so soon was excessive. But after carrying both several times now they both have very distinct strengths and roles for carrying.

Thanks!

And like I said - what I might be most blown away by is the quality of craftsmanship and design. Being able to disassemble and reassemble without having to tweak them for tension, centering, etc. amazes me. The great customer service and spa treatment options is a tasty icing on the cake!

Very nice score. The large regular's previous owner didn't remove ton's of stock when touching up that beefy blade (to my eye) and you'll have a real beauty in your pocket when it gets back home.

That swedged large regular in BG-42 is probably the best production folding knife ever made, so I would say you did OK. :p:thumbup:

Duuuuuude! That large regular is AWESOME. Never let it go!!! Or if you do send me a PM!;) 2 really awesome knives you've got.

Welcome to the obsession BWall. Two great knives. Now your ready for inlays, and custom graphics, and Mnandis, and Ums. and.........

"That swedged large regular in BG-42 is probably the best production folding knife ever made, so I would say you did OK" CRK would disagree. They believe the current production Sebenza is the best production folding knife ever made, or else they'd still be making the BG-42 version :)

I couldn't care less what you think so take your stupid trolling else where.

BG-42 is superior to S30V for a number of reasons, I own and use both so I know it's better reagrdless of what you think.

Yep, the large regular framed Sebenzas are many people's favorite, esp in Bg-42. Thats why they are so hard to find, and expensive if you do.
My large and small BG-42 Sebenzas are my favorite Sebenzas. I carry a Spyderco Military with BG-42 alot also, as BG-42 is my favorite steel.
You don't see it used much because its hard to get in a large supply these days.

Again OP, you did good!

That Large Regular is nice. I seriously thought about getting that one if it's from another forum I'm on a lot. You're pictures really do it justice.

Enjoy!

That regular is awesome....and a little strange. In the third picture It looks like the cut out for the lock bar is on the outside under the clip.
I've never seen one like that before. Or are they all like and I haven't been looking closely enough.

His knife is the same as mine, it's cut out on both sides. Not many of those about I don't think.

Edit to add a pic.......
