That was a relatively short dry spell! I bought my first Schrade of 2007 today. I was trying to be good - but this was just one of those situations where you see a knife that you would like to own, so you put a bid on the knife and forget about it. I was surprised to find out that I won it when I checked to see how much it finally went for. I won it by $.25!

A nice old 293 trapper - here's a link to the eBay auction which ended a little while ago http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dl...MEWN:IT&viewitem=&item=110078553254&rd=1&rd=1

My first "open stock" Schrade.

It's impossible to quit collecting knives. I give up trying to quit!

Well now that you have fallen off the wagon, the pressures off.. Let the buying begin LOL ... Nice trapper, I was actually watching that one, but we've got so much goin on sellin our house and stuff, I lost track of time and forgot to bid... Seems I forget more and more every day

OK, now I feel qualified to say that I am a Schradeaholic. In the last 4 days, I've purchased the following 6 knives:

4 pin LB7 NIB
another 293 - this one NIB
Colonial gentleman's knife
194OT NIB (w/ the "compliments of Schrade Cutlery 1984" etch)
Camco 572
206 Barlow NIB

BTW - there is great info in the archives on the 206 Barlow! You guys must really have a passion for this pattern! I am excited to check out my first...

Any other guys out there dealing with the weather by growing their collection?

Now, who in their right mind would post something about the lowley 206 Barlow pattern?

Just a Schrade-a-holic right Kevin? I see so many knives I like I have a hard time not bidding on more. Timstools is right. The only way to not bid is to not look.

I am doing my buying this month as my wife & I agreed that we would try to save money next month, just to see how much we could save. (Besides I am saving for a 2 X 72 belt sander and they don't give those things away.)

So, I have to buy this month. Well, about a week ago Randy sent me an email saying there was a 44OT on ebay that he had put an opening bid on, but he didn't want to buy it now & that I should go for it. So...............I did. It just ended at $55. I was quite surprised (but happy :D ) I got is so cheap.

There have been three 44OTs sold on ebay in the 2 weeks. The first sold for $150, the second for $81 and this one for $55. It seems that when a rare pattern goes on and sells for a high price, it is soon followed by others, which typically don't sell for as much. I am not sure why that is, but this time it worked in my favor.

So, I can go on the wagon for February, and not feel bad about doing so.

Be sure to watch for a huge thud on March first as I fall off the wagon! :D :D

It's pretty hard to have a hobby like collecting knives and NOT look at the knives being sold!

It's probably just like everything else - discipline and balance. If you've got a couple bucks, enjoy the show... If you're dead cracked, get out the oil and pay some attention to your existing collection. When they're organized and clean, I don't know...read a newspaper or watch a movie?!

I still suck at this disciplin and balance crap! I think it's two steps forward one step back for a while...

Either way, I got some fantastic deals last week (if the knives arrive.) Are there less people bidding right now because of the Christmas Visa blues?

Well, like the 165OT FIRST PRODUCTION MIB HINGE BOX WITH STONE that I let go to Eric this past week, I am just at a low point in finances right now. But it never fails, someone will ask a question and I have to do a survey of eBay to refresh my memory, or to try to evaluate their prospective purchase. And in between, in spite of my resolve, a collector friend will send me a knife he knows I want. Or in this week's case, a friend happens into a K-Mart that has found old stock, and sends me four new clampacks of them. "Honest honey, I didn't buy them! Really!"

For me, it is really easier to have "play money" put back, and convince myself to maintain "price dicipline", dropping out of bidding and passing over knives when the bids go even fifty cents over what I feel is a good price I can live with.

And my local dealer (mostly NASCAR memorabilia) still has a supply of NIB Schrades in the back room, holding them for me. No, I didn't ask him to. In fact, I bought what I wanted from the stock some time back. But I've been back many times since, and hardly ever leave without another one.

But how do you just not look?

Michael

And how do you not look?

Who said anything about not looking? I intend to look.......a lot & drool some no doubt. But I will just tell myself, that for every dollar I save in February is a dollar I will have to spend in April at the OKCA show in Eugene. They have a LOT of old knives there!

So if I don't go crazy falling off the wagon on March 1st, I should have a good time buying at the OKCA show. :D :D

I might be in a comeback mood too. Just bought a NIB 6OT that no one else bid on. I already have a 6OT, but this one is in a different colored box. :D

But if prices are going to be out of control or it seems like the overall auction mood is super-competitive, I'll step back out. The affordable prices and "everydayness" of Old Timers were the primary reason I started collected. I'm not going to pay super-premium prices for plastic-handled factory knives that were mass-produced by the tens of thousands.

I'll just have to keep an eye open and see what happens.

Codger, that's it, twist the knife a little more:eek: :D :D . I can sense the wrath of the roo-meister hot on my heels :) .I haven't even gotten on the wagon yet when yesterday I got a call from an associate who just got a bunch of Canal Street protos he wants me to check out. I honestly doubt I'll be able to resist. I'll keep you posted.

What I've found if I go to the Buck site on Ebay I get a rude awakening. This week I bid on two knives I wanted to compare to very similar Schrades I have. They went for about three times what I would have paid for them.I like my Schrades. If I hit a broke time I unload a few of my duplicates an buy new knives.Usually it's an upgrade.Arnold

I saw a Buck 110, albeit an early one, go for around eight hundred last week. A comparable very early LB7 I bought last year for about 1/16th of that. Perhaps Schrades are just catching up with the Jonses pricewise.
