Like most everyone else on this forum, I love knives. I'm both a collector and a user and have more knives in my collection than I care to count. Case, Benchmade, Kershaw, Microtech, Emerson, Al Mar, and even CRKT are all members, but I've always avoided Spyderco. Maybe it was the strange shape of some of the blades, or the extensive use of FRN, or what I considered to be too low prices to possibly be a quality knife, or, I guess, a combination of all of these factors that kept me from seriously considering the purchase of a Spyderco.
Then I began reading the posts about Spyderco knives throughout these forums and came to the realization that people who owned Spydercos really, really liked them. In fact, most seemed to be almost fanatical about their "Spydies". Soooooo, about a month ago I ordered a ZDP 189 Caly Jr. I was sure that I wouldn't like the FRN scales, and I've never been a huge fan of lockbacks, but I was intrigued by the flat grind blade and its shape, AND it was ZDP 189 steel after all even if it was laminated, and the price was right. I figured that if I hated it, I could always sell it and get my money back.
Well, about a week later it arrived in the mail. I slowly opened the Spyderco box and took the knife out, and was immediately struck by the how light it felt in my hand. Thanks FRN scales. Then my thumb found the "Spydie Hole" and I arced the blade open to an authoritative "click". Smooooth! Zero blade play up or down, left or right. Thumb on the release with just the right amount of pressure, and the blade unlocked and slid closed with a snap. Say, these lockbacks aren't too bad. Once again, open, snap, release and close, snap. I can feel the addiction beginning to take hold.
Looking the knife over closely, I could see that it was a quality product. The design of the FRN scales kept the knife securely in my grip and it just felt right in my hand. Nice piece. Very nice piece. I think I've just found a new EDC. This one goes to work with me tomorrow!
Well, as I said, that was a month or so ago. It's now 1 Delica 4, 1 Manix C101GP, 1 Manix C95GP, and 1 Mini Persian later with 1 Para Military and 1 Pink Delica on the way, and that Stretch II is looking pretty good........but first I have to let my finances recover. Like I said, I finally got bitten, big time.
