Well, it took me a very long time to realise, but I finaly finished my first knife!
I chalanged myself to use nothing more then handtools and elbowgrease.
(I did alow myself to use a drillpress I didn’t see a way around that)

The handle is made of water buffalo horn.
The initial idea was to use self-made mozaik pins, but along the way I damaged the horn in a way I couldn‘t fix.
So I worked around that by inlaying slabs of ivory.
I think it worked out even better than the initial plan.

I learned that I prefer the finer detailled work over the rough stock removing. Just a matter of personal taste.
(the bug realy bit me, today I send out five knifes to be hardened. But now I have a grinder :))

Steel: RWL34
25cm = app. 9 7/8inch
Handle: Water buffalo horn, inlayed with ivory from old piano keys
Handsanded up to gritt 2500

I made the lanyard loop round to look like it was attached later, but it is one solid piece.
Zig-zag filing on top to give extra grip for the thumb.
The with of the steel didn’t alow me to have a fingercoil the size I wanted, so I added extra lenght with an extra bit of handle materiaal.

So what do you guys think?

Fantastic job! Great sheath too
(now I have to keep my eyes open for old piano keys) ;)

Very nice work! The inlay work on the handle is very nice and I particularly like the cutout at the rear of the handle for a lanyard....Very nice.

I love the inlay, and that lanyard loop is definitely VERY distinctive and classy. Exceptionally good-looking first knife!

Very nice work! I will say that you have the cleanest hands of any knifemaker I've ever seen.

Very Very Nice....I wish my first came out like that, but it didnt...

Good Luck with the next one,
Bruce

Very nice job!!!!!!!
For your first one??????? Where do you plan on going from here????????

I wish my FIFTH had come out near that nice.

The lanyard loop is really sweet. well done and well balanced to the knife. The inlay looks fantastic, and the handle shape is great, too. I don't know if you meant to, but it says "orca" all over it.

I like it alot! You done good. How many hours do you estimate you have into that project? 47

Thnx for the compliments :)

I didn't count the hours, but since it is my first one I found out a lot by trial and error. A rough guess would be 100-150hours. (handtools only)

But if I would make an exact copy I guess I could do it in half the time now.

koyote: Orca would be a good name, I didn't think of that :)

Very nice piece, and knowing it's the first knife you made, that makes it that much nicer. Love the black & white theme. Would you possibly make one along the same lines to sell? (Or is it appropriate to ask that here in this forum?) Reason I ask is that my 'callsign' in the Navy was 'Orca'. Ever since, killer whales have kind of been my favorite animals.

thx - cpr

That might be the best "first" knife I have seen.
