Here is a walking stick I just completed for my mom. She was here on break - picked a stave out of the dozen or so I have and I quickly whipped this up for her.

I did 4 coats of Golden oak stain, three coats of gloss poly, and a cap at the base. Glued on with 2 ton epoxy and screwed in place. I also hammered the finish on the cap and did a instant patina.

I used an SAK to harvest the stave (standing dead), I used an Aurora to strip the bark, and a Case Warncliff to clean it up. I then used a barrel sander on my dremel for the carving and then cleaned that up with some 220 hand sand paper.

I think it turned out okay.

Very nice..... What kind of wood.... maple?

There.... I was nice and polite.... seeing how it was a "mommy" thread and all.

Fantastic! I like the Dremelizing at the top. Cool! I'm gonna have to try it on the black walnut hiking staff I'm making for myself.

Thanks Rick. I have NO idea of the wood. It was a VERY white wood and smelled great as I sanded and cut it. It makes good bow drill fire too - I used the extra length to test it. I would call it a medium hardness wood.

Very nice!

I've been on the lookout for just the right piece of hickory to make a stick for my mother. I hope when I find it, the finished walking stick comes out as nice as yours.

Stay sharp,

Thats nice. Now how are you going to ship that puppy back to Michigan????

I have 2 walking sticks here made from lengths of bamboo. Just cut themoff, snaded and varnished them. About 3 1/2 feet long. Good for keeping away the wild dogs.

I don't need to ship this one to Michigan - my mom was visiting - and flew back with it today. She got about 1/2 a dozen compliments on the stick on the way home. ;)

Great work T.F.

Allthough I would never give that to my mother, you should see the damage she can do with just a wood spoon.... I still have scars!
