I Finished my Bearded Axe

I think .187 would be a good maximum thickness .157 may be ideal. It will definitely cut wood. Taking branches off tress should not pose any problems. I agree with scoutet27 about splitting wood. With the blade being the center and the handle on the outside, you would not be able to cleanly split any heavy diameters. The shape of the blade enables it to be a good skinner and handy for making wooden tools. There's room behind the head to grip the handle for fine cutting chores. Making it too thick is just not practical to me.

Here's an example of an axe that cuts and slices very well. The blade is only.118 or 3mm. It's not made for splitting, but is still a very handy axe. I have one and it's nice to have on your belt or in your pack on a hike. It's a Normark hunters, skinning axe.
I still like the bearded style head that Ben made better. I need to make a blade cover for my bearded axe. As I posted earlier, it takes a razor edge when honed.

Thanks. I can't wait to get another head so I can make another one. It was a lot of fun.

Thanks for the compliment Jim. I've got more projects planned, but I need to find the time to do them.
