Ok...take a look.

Ok, well I swapped out my thumbstud for the stud off of my CRKT Mirage. (Not as easy as it sounds) The CRKT thumbstud needs to be drilled so that the screw sits lower. This will let the screw reach across the length of the SERE's thicker blade.

Also retro-fitting the SERE stud onto my Mirage was a pain. That story is available upon request.

Secondly, I did a little Dremel drill file-work on the back of the thumb ramp for more positive thumb traction. I also did similar texturing on the liner lock to take the sharp edge off, and to improve lock location by touch.

Anyway, I couldnt be happier with the way it turned out. The thumb stud feels so...NORMAL!!! Hope you guys like it.

Nice work. How does the thumb ramp feel? I ike the thumb studs. I've been playing with various ones one mine and haven't come up with one that is quite right. It looks like you may have hit on something.

If ignorance is bliss,
why aren't more people happy?

The thumb ramp feels just about the way it looks. It is just a little more rough, just a little better traction, nothing drastic. I didnt want to go overboard and mess up my brand new knife. It is just enough so that it doesnt feel slick, and so that it is easy to tell where your thumb is supposed to be.

For one, I'd like to hear the retro-fitting of SERE stud to Mirage. E-mail would be fine. I have a couple Mirages, and I'm without mechanical aptitude, so would need assistance to follow your lead, AV, if I ever buy a SERE.

Ever since I read Jeff Randall's review of the SERE 2000, I'd been thinking it was a knife I'd really like to get. Don't think I've read any review that praised a knife so highly. Then, after reading of several lock failures, lost some of my enthusiasm. So, both you guys are basically happy with yours, at least the lock? There is an apparent grip/slipperiness problem I don't believe I've read about before.

Thanks,

Arinvolvo:
You can buy replacement screws for the Mirage at the Hardware Store. They are standard length and size. They are also inch not metric. I know, I retrofitted several of them. Just get a longer size screw in stainless and no one will ever know.

Bugs...as for the mirage...

First off, The SERE stud screw will not tighten down on such a thin blade...so i had to shorten the screw on the bench grinder.

Secondly the hole in the mirage blade is just slightly too small for the SERE stud screw.

This doesnt sound all that bad, but I cant believe how hard it is to drill through stainless blade steel. It was also a little tricky grinding the screw, and still keeping the trueness of the threads to that it would thread back on later.

Also Bugs, I have not had any lock failure with my SERE. It passed the spine whack test easily. I actually got to the point that it would have been scary to whack it any harder. Very good, solid knife.

If anyone has a SERE 2k and a small CRKT Mirage that they would like to have swapped, e-mail me an let me know. I would be happy to make the transformation for you. All I ask is tht you pay for return shipping.

Oh also....The slipperiness thing is really nothing. The knife isnt slippery at all, the back of the grip is just smooth. I heard a couple people gripe about how they would have liked to seen some sort of knurling or texturing on the back of the handle. And to tell you the truth, I didnt really think it was a big deal...I just happened to be in the creative mood last night. I actually astonished myself at how ballsy I was getting with such an expensive knife...Im not usually like that.
