I found a double dash 110 at the pawn shop today. PICS ADDED

We have a couple pawn shops locally, and every once in awhile I go to see what kind of goodies are available.

Today I had the day off, so I stopped in one to look around...

At first quick glance it looked like the same junk they had the last time I was in.
Then I spotted a black Buck 110 sheath on the bottom rack, mixed in with some other stuff.

They were really busy, but the fact that it was a black sheath, and it looked new, I had to wait, so I could take a look inside...

When I pulled it out of the sheath, it really caught my eye. The Ebony scales were beautiful. It took me a few seconds to stop staring at them, and remember to look at the tang stamps. It is a double dash knife, and it looks like whoever bought it new, put it in the drawer and forgot about it.

I've had a some older and newer 110's, and just never warmed up to them. I prefer the girlie 112:D. There is something about it though, and I can't stop thinking about. I think its the scales...
Maybe this will be the 110 that changes my feeling about them. I know the knife is dimensionally the same, but I have to try and see.

The asking price is lower than a new 110 at the Wally Mart :D, and they have always done some dealing in the past, so even if I decide I still prefer the 112, I won't get hurt on it.

I think I will stop on my way to work tomorrow, and get it.
If I do, I'll post up some pics of it as found...

You'll do well on that one.

The Single Dash seems to be a little harder to find, but people want to own both.

I looked for several years to get nice examples of the '92s (Dash and Double Dash) at a good price.

They always get a lot of bids on e-Bay.....I suspect there's more than a few people looking for them.

I also suspect that Buck went to the Double Dash marking early in the year so there are more Doubles around, but nobody knows for sure, so both are quite desirable.

Good find.

Thanks BG. Its funny because when I saw the double dash, a light went on in my head (which doesn't happen often:D ), because I remembered reading about them in the past, but couldn't remember if it was good, or bad.

So after getting home, I did some searchin here to learn a little more about them. I should have bought it when I was there, but didn't . I'm sure it will still be there in the morning. At least I hope it is

Well if you decide to pass, buy it anyway, at that price I'll send you a money order. I think Joe said it was about a midyear change, so they should be equally easy...or difficult to find. I have them(single and double) on my list of must haves. Personally, I think you should add it to your collection:thumbup:

Hopefully one of these days I will discover somethign that tells us when in 1992 the change took place.
In the meantime, I did find out that we made over 52,000 110fg's in 1992. Thats a bunch. Even if we figure that the change took place at the end of June, thats 26k with the double dash.

338, We had this discussion at one time and I dug out the Engineering memorandum change for this stamp in a club newsletter and posted it here . I think they are called ERC's . Anyway it occured in Jan. or Feb. of 1992 so nearly the entire years production had the double dash stamp . Making the single dash stamp much harder to find . I suspect both are 425 steel . DM

There were 112,500 standard 110s made in 1992, and what Joe said was "I know that when they say "mid-year" they only mean not January or December..."

Mid-year is not a term that is used with any precision at all.

So all we really have to go on is that some people have said they have more trouble finding the Single than the Double. That's fair evidence, but not conclusive.

I know I've seen something about a Buck memo that came out in 1991 indicating the change was forthcoming early in 1992, so that also figures into my conclusions on this matter.

Maybe Joe won't be so busy this week and can chat with us a bit.

Also.....maybe the top guns will hire an intern to do some historical research for Joe on several matters that he's had on hold for years.

:D

EDIT: Dave got in his post before mine. Good work, Dave.......maybe we'll turn up the actual post on that Buck memo......I know it's here somewhere.

I found the old post from Dave Martin.

I've researched this before but couldn't find the thread so I had to do it again . I found it in 'Tidbits' on pg. 12 in the June 2006 issue . Not sure the author of those but it has Joe's style . However, Bill Keys Buck's Senior Engineer wrote a memo dated Dec. 5, 1991 on a ECR (engineering change request) "that the new rocker and spring holder redesign has been approved . The 1992 knives will bear the double minus stamp after additional testing on newly designed production parts..." The change was on the spring holder and did affect the blade or rocker . So, just looking at this I'd have to say the single minus is more rare which some here have . DM

Good work, Dave!

Thanks for the info. If I get it and still don't warm up to the size, I'll let you know

Thanks David. I was wondering if it might be 425. Cool...

I don't know how many Buck nuts we have in our area, but I think I'll head to work a little earlier just to be safe.

ok 338:thumbup:

I had the single dash 110 at one time but traded it to a fellow Buck collector . I did have a chance to sharpen it and cut some with it and it holds a decent edge . I remember that . DM

I think you can count on 425M--my notes say 420HC came in AFTER 1993, although we always read these things with a grain of salt. Changes hardly ever took place on 1 Jan. of a given year and things almost always slopped over a bit to one year or the other.

I know there was a physical difference in the blades when they went from 440C to 425M......it would be nice if there was a physical difference of some kind between the 425M and the 420HC.

Anybody got anything on that? I've never heard of such a thing, but I could have missed it.

That would certainly make things a lot easier, especially for people like me who have a limited knowledge...

Although I know that any questions I come up with, there are always great answers to be found here

My Grandson is a double dash.

I had a DD 112 that I restored to looking like new and gave it to him for Christmas a few years ago when he was smaller. He was amazed that it was as old as he was and looked brand new.

Took him hunting a few weeks back and he wanted to stop at Academy on the way and spend some of his gift card.

First thing he headed to was the Buck display and grabbed a 110. I told him no and he didn't.

What I didn't tell him was that I have a DD 110 laying here on my desk that with a little brasso will soon look like brand new. He will be 19 soon :D

You can't go wrong grabbing that one up.

Thats really cool. It would be nice to find a dd 112 too
Heck, he is only 19 and already has a couple nice ones...

I'm getting ready for work now, so in a little while I'll be headin to the pawn shop to see if it still there :D

I had a DD 112 that I restored

Now you're blowing my mind!!!

Didn't we just have a thread recently where it was determined that Double Dash 112s DID NOT exist????

???????

My bad guys...

Just called the grandson and sure nuff there is only one minus sign on it.

Bummer...In my old feeble mind I would have bet money that there were two minus signs.

Sorry,,,,

Good catch BG42
