I found this buried in my yard. What is it?

I was pulling a huge forsythia bush out of my yard and I saw the handle sticking out of the dirt about a foot underneath the ground. I gave it a tug and this is what I found.

Any ideas as to what it is? There are no markings. It almost looks handmade. I have no clue where it is from or how long it has been down there. Surprisingly the blade still has a decent edge on it for a chopper.

If it's nothing valuable (i don't know) clean it up. I found a rusty carbon machete sitting around in my garage. Took some coarse sand paper to the blade until it was down to bare metal, then took some finer paper and down to fine wet dry then steel wooled it. Sharpened the edge up with a file and then sprayed it all down with silicone spray. I cleaned the handle up/off with the fine sand paper, it cleaned up the pins and smoothed the handle. It's mint now, and i use it a lot. Nobody wanted it because it was rusty, but i knew what the rust meant :-).

i wouldnt clean it.if it is worth anything youll loost all its value. i found an officers sword from the civil war on our property. and that was the first thing they said not to do. do not clean...until you find out.

Where would I go to have this thing evaluated?

I used to comment all over the place on BladeForums but life has gotten rolling so fast I hardly have time to check the site. Does anyone know of any experts around this page that could answer any questions?

It's an awesome fine, regardless.

How long have you been living there that you JUST found it?

I've been living here for 5 years.

My wife got sick of the bush and told me to get rid of it. I was ticked until I found the knife!

man.........I tell ya what. Every single person I've spoken to, outside of the internets, has said it was probably used to hack someone to bits.

...........do you think that will effect the value?

It's a Phillipine bolo, clean it if you want, it has good value as a tool, marginal value as a collectible. You might get $25 for it in that shape.

it is possible it was left there by accident, but buried in a yard indicates to me someone was attempting to hide it.

sounds like potential evidence of a criminal act.

rofl people are so melodramatic. That is of course statistically unlikely; what do you think happens more often, tools being forgotten outside, or bloody murder?

It was probably being used when the bushes were planted, and got accidentally forgotten and buried. All it would take is one carelessly tossed shovelful of dirt and it disappears...

It might've just been put down by a gardener/landscaper when working/clearing the property before you moved in(?). The bush you pulled out, was it one that's been there a very long time? Might've accidentally fallen into the original hole when it (or something else) was planted.

When my property was prepped for my house, some of the people doing the ground work left some implements behind after the fact (like a pick axe & shovel). Seems like it might be easy for such things to be overlooked/misplaced when the workers clear out.

Nah.......that makes too much sense. It has to be something more dramatic than that.
