I found this in the Knife Test Forum ...

remember also, that modern INFI is a couple of Rc points lower than older INFI, at 59. At the old Rc of 61, INFI would still be tougher than all those steels and be up in the level 2 or 3 range.

interesting that VG1 beat VG-10. Whoda thunkit

also if you have ever tried to sharpen S90V, S60V or 440V, you'd know why you don't want to have steels at that tier, lol...I am perfectly happy with ATS-34 or D2 in a folding knife.

I also had a Buck 420HC knife and I loved how easy it was to sharpen, even if it did not hold an edge that long.

Wow.
So why did Busse lower the Rockwell... easier to sharpen?
I'm lucky I can use a belt grinder and buffer to sharpen my knives.

no probably because of stupid people like me who over abuse the knives..Actually even at 61 Rc, my SHBM's were easy to sharpen.

I have been wondering this since Cobalt brought it up in another thread. It just makes no sense to me.

Honestly the new INFI could be described as rubber it is so malleable. I for one would invite the old hardness standard unless there is something we are missing.

Well, I am guessing that the current Rc is lower, right at 59?

That was the impression I was under. I even remember Jerry stating that INFI will not go over 60. It was a long time ago and I can't say it with any certainty or authority though.

The BAD's were at 62 hrc, the Ron Hood mistress 64, iirc.

Yeah, I knew about the BAD's but had no idea about 64hrc INFI. It would be nice for Jerry to step in and clarify. Maybe make a sticky of some more facts if there is not one already. It seems this comes up often. I really do not believe I dreamed up Jerry stating that INFI will not go over 60 for some reason.

I think the Ron hood mistress was 61-62, actually he had two, and the first may have been 65 or something.

To the OP, I follow Ankerson's thread you are referencing. Just post any questions you have in that thread, he will answer. He may stumble across this thread and post in it, but he is a real nice guy and crazy knowledgeable. He will give you an unbiased opinion as well. As others have noted, his thread can be controversial, but has a lot of good conversation and has not been shut down, that is because of the respect for Jim and what he presents.

actually, it looks like he tried to standardize his testing by making all the blades edges the same, 30 deg inclusive. Very informative. I would like to know a little more about how he classifies his classes of blades, level 1-8

Years ago before I discovered INFI a favorite knife of mine (with amazing edge retention) snapped in half when I needed to free up a frozen marine hatch cover in a semi-emergency type scenario.
I'll stick with INFI. I trust INFI a whole heap more not to catastrophically fail on me in an unusual or unexpected use circumstance.
