I give up

Well, I've wasted lots of money, and bought maybe two dozen knives, looking for that perfect EDC.

Of course, I still haven't found it. Now I'm left with lots of knives that I don't ever carry, one that I carry almost every day, and a couple that I carry when I'm in the mood.

My "almost perfect" EDC is the Spyderco Chinook II. My only reservation is that the handle is not completely secure in my hand, because it doesn't fill my hand well enough. The Chinook I had a wider grip, which was more secure, but it is much harder to open / close.

I'm starting to feel like I've wasted enough money looking for that "perfect" carry knife, and it is time to give up. (There should be a "Knife-aholics Anonymous.) For now, the Chinook II is the winner. Until something spectacular crosses my path, I think I am through actively collecting [aside from that Benchmade 630 that I have on backorder :) ].

Now the real question is, what else am I gonna start doing to waste time and money instead...

Regards,
cds1

New Digital Camera? New Mountain Bike? Other-carry knive, such as neck knives, belt-carry, IWB carry? Guns? Fly rods/reels?

When it comes to men's toys, opportunites for squandering money abound.

Multi-tools, watches and flashlights. :)

Mike

Watches...Now you NEED to start collecting watches.:D.

Wait a minute,

You mean that this isn't knifeaholics anonymous?!?!

Darn, and I thought that the time that I spent here counted as therapy.

No wonder the couch wasn't that comfortable.

CDS-1,

sell your collection and get a custom maker to make a CHinook-type folder with larger handle and easy opening blade! Get a better steel if you want, some inlays, whatever. Go custom!!

(just to warn you though, you'll still want to buy knives. You are a knife nut, that is what we do!)

Well now, if you really want something to suck up the dough, try out gun collecting/shooting/reloading/casting. If that doesn't do it check out boating/fishing(fly,spin,salt,fresh,etc,etc)/camping. If you still have excess bucks to get rid of go for jeeping.
Then you may need a new wife, and you'll REALLY be talking some serious bucks!

I was starting to get a bit burned out after a couple of years of furious purchasing. It seemed like every new knife was less satisfying than the last. Of course, I already had an excellent knife for just about every occasion, so it was going to be tough to find one that I was actually going to use.

My solution: I started trading all my non-users away here on the exchange forum. What a great resource! I've ended up with some really nice knives and multitools, and I didn't miss the non-users that I traded away at all. The only downside is multiple trips to the Post Office - not exactly my favorite place to stand in line, but all-in-all a very positive experience.

i hear you cds1! i have the exact same thing going for a while. i have about 10 tactical folders laying around here, worth an awful lot of $$$, and none of them is "the perfect tactical folder". all the money i spent on this makes me angry and sad, i could have saved up for a motorcycle instead, but i didn't.........

currently i've shifted my interest to the multi-tools and am considering making my LM Wave my one and only EDC and end it right there: i will then never buy new knives anymore, ever. i've learned from my own behaviour and all the posts of countless other knifeaholics on the forums that this madness will never end, unless you stop yourself.........(think about it, there's hundreds of guys on the forum right now discussing over and over which slip-joint is best and with what tactical folder they would pry open a crate......yet still they haven't found peace, even though they may have been knife-nuts for decades and have a 3 display cases full of knives worth a trillion $$$$$ and all they use on the job is Superknife, because all the others were just not perfect.....)

by the way, like the others stated, there are indeed lots of other ways to spend your money on other guys-stuff and toys to keep you busy, but don't, repeat DON'T start collecting watches (!), this basically goes for EVERY collecting-hobby. i've been there too, and i can tell you that, before you know it you'll be starting a quest for "the perfect mechanical dive-watch", browse the watch-fora each day vigorously, buy a digicam and take pictures of watches, etc....and eventually end up with a dozen watches costing thousands of $$$$'s and still not find one amongst them that's 'the one', and you will be banging your head against the wall thinking what else you could have done with all that cash. the same could actually be said of practically every collecting-hobby. hobbies like these are basically about spending your money, perfectionism, short thrills, even filling certain psychological voids is very common when it comes to hobbies like these.............we're basically all a bunch of nuts that are hard to crack. there is a good reason why on forums about knives/wristwatches/flashlights/<fill in other toy here> that there are always frequently discussions running about whether the participants are weird, insane, or admit feeling it's like an compulsive illness yet make jokes about it. the thing is........it IS ill.

i may be looking at this too seriously some people will probably say, but i'll tell you this: in collecting-hobbies you will NEVER be satisfied. in fact, they might even be considered destructive and stressful. anyone who disagrees with this, is either in denial or you are someone who manages to control his urges and is perfectly happy with just 1 or 2 <$50 knives but still 'just likes knives'.

i think an extra forum would be indicated on BF and KF: "The KAA", knife-aholics-anonymous. How to beat your disease. Discuss obsessive-compulsive behavior, self-destructive collecting-madness, withdrawal symptoms and how-to-win-the-fight. all in a friendly intelligent discussion amongst your friends" :D

good luck to you,
dennis

PS. ok guys, bring the flamethrowers and let me have it.........

I thought about going custom, like you said. But I decided not to, because I figured I would end up collecting custom knives, as you also said. That would really drive me broke! I'm sticking to production knives.

(I haven't given up on the Chinook I, btw. Maybe after sitting in a box in the half-open position for a few months the spring will weaken and it will get easier to open. It is already much better than when I bought it, after sitting that way for a few weeks. I figure that if magazine springs wear out after you leave your magazine fully loaded for several months, because of the constant tension on the spring, the same concept should apply here. If it doesn't work, at least it won't cost me anything.)

If you're not going to buy knives, guns or watches, you've got two choices. Give your paycheck to your wife and ask her to pick you out a nice inexpensive hobby or take the money you're going to save and use it on table dances at the local strip club.

I'd be much further ahead had I done this in the first place. You meet the nicest people there too. :D

How about guitars? Plenty of ways to spend money - acoustic or electric guitars (and there's the same debate there about U.S. made or import), amps, amp modelers, effects pedals, picks, straps, cases, strings that are supposed to last a long time, mixers, multitrack recorders, devices that'll let you record your masterpieces directly on your computer - shall I go on? :D

You've barely scratched the surface, have you found your Office Every Day Carry, Every Day Utility, Self Defense, Car Knife, Garden Knife, Tool Box Knife, Camp Knife, Trail Knife, Fishing Knife, or Hunting Knife? Yeah, maybe, but you probably forgot your Travel Knife,or Boston Knife (Must be under 2.5 inch blade in case you find yourself in Boston).

And that's just folders, you'll need fixed blade versions of all them as well.

Try modifying your Chinook 1 to your liking.
I don't know a whole lot about mechanics,
but I do know there's a LOT of people on these forums that have made improvements (to them at least) with a dremmel or other hand tools.

Let's see... I have a regular EDC, an "extra discreet" EDC (when I am dressed up and wan't to keep pocket bulge to a minimum), a couple of home defence knives (backup to the gun), utility knives (that I don't mind beating up), an extra large (but legal size) knife for dangerous neighborhoods, a couple of under-three-inch travel knives (I didn't know about the 2.5 inch rule in Boston  ), a keychain knife (for when I am among people who would be scared of the larger knife that I am carrying), and a couple of "novelty" knives that I carry when I'm bored with my normal EDC... and about a dozen more "seemed like a good idea at the time" knives  . I definitely need a few more...

Hi cds1.

Sounds like you need to try your hand at making your own knife. This is probably the best way to get exactly what you want. Only problem is that the tools to make them start to become the addiction. good luck

Just to present the other side of this... I spent a few years going through production knives too. Eventually I ended up with a very specific set of requirements for my "perfect" folder which, of course, nothing on the market matched. So I finally broke down and spent what was to me an unbelievable amount of money and ordered a one-of-a-kind custom. And I have carried it ever since. :-)

I do have other folders that I keep around for various purposes, but my custom is with me all but a handful of days in any given year. It cost around three times as much as my second most expensive folder and was worth every penny.
