Well actually I made a Blue Tyrade. I recently got a Tan G10 one and decided to dye it blue. It worked out pretty good. Now we'll see how long it lasts. It is going to get a good dose of grease, oil and solvents at work. I used the royal blue Rit dye.

Is there a special procedure for dyeing it? Or do I just follow instructions on bottle? Because I am doing it too. It looks awesome!

BTW: I'll assume that Rit does not list instructions for dyeing a Tyrade. :D

Looking good!

If it works out, send them your procedure and they can add that to their instructions. :p

I used the boil method. Put a half pack of powder dye into a pot of water just big enough to hold the scales and brought it to a simmer. Tied strings onto the scales and periodically checked them for color. I think the whole dye time was about 10 minutes or so. Rinsed them off in cold water until no more dye came off and then scrubbed them with dish soap to see if any more came off. Luckily they did not require a second round of dye. Also used rubber gloves.

Thank you!

I also learned that it's powdered Dye and not sold in a bottle. I see it at the supermarket all the time. Knowing how little I know about dying anything. I foresee a 3 stooges sized disaster in my future.

I'll test it on something less expensive first.

I had an old RC-10 that had white nylon parts all over it. I used to use Rit Dye to change their color and they held up well. Only a deep gouge would show the orginal color. I would get oils and solvents on it all the time with no discoloration. Although, that might not be a great indicator for how well G-10 takes dye.

I have two white Enduras. One is NIB the other DIRTY. I saw someone, somewhere dye the scales red and it looked really great. I have wanted to dye both Enduras since.

Rit dye works great. There's a picture thread at the Spyderco forum about dyed knives. I believe I saw the above mentioned red Endura, as well as a blackened G10 Dragonfly and a purple FRN Dragonfly.

soliel did you degrease knife 1st.i guess the boiling would accomplish the same. i have some concern about silicone lubes since they are relatively inert. we have polymer experts among us if they care to comment. i think you did a great job since color is even. wonder what the effect would be on bone? if you notice bleed out later try a short immersion in citric acid. anhydros or monohydrate can be purchased at pharmacy in powder form. my dilution rate is one teaspoon per 8oz. of tap water. good idea to use a baking soda rinse next. of course lube follows as final step; citric is excellent dye set.thanks for sharing, this could be of interest to many forum members.

Yes Dennis I did scrub it down with orange clean as it was very dirty from using it at work for the last few days. Thanks for the tips to stop any bleed out that may occur:thumbup:
The link should work now, I am still new at this picture thing:o.
