Here's a mini chopper in Elmax for a friend who has never met my kids, but sends them a Christmas and birthday present every year. It is a gift. 12.3" OAL, 3/16"+ stock. He's a Harley guy, so unless he wants something else he will get black G10 with orange G10 liners on the handle. I'm going to drill the tang for weight.

Let me know what you think.

Here are my two cents: The grind looks perfect; the over-all lines are great; you're friend is one lucky guy.

I really like the design and I agree with Woodsroamer, the grinds look incredible. I only dream of the day I can make one look that good.

woodsroamer and jasonprom,

Thank you for the nice comments. I like this one a lot, but hope my friend likes it more. He deserves it.

Erik, that is looking clean as a whistle!! Your grinds get better with every knife. I'm really looking forward to seeing this one as it gets closer to completion. Nice work!

beautiful grinds! do you eyeball it ?
I wish i could get my grinds that clean everytime!

I really like that knife man! How is the Elmax to work with? I have a bar of it but I haven't cut into it yet.

Thanks, Sticky - I eyeball how high to take the bevels. I put a sharpie mark on top of the spine to match where they end toward the tip. If the grind gets away from me a bit I take some passes on a granite slab.

Thank's, blackcell - I would say that Elmax is a little tougher to drill than say, 440C, but easier than M390. It takes longer to grind and uses more belts than 440C.

I finally got back to my buddy's knife. He has been very patient, which is nice.

I think it came out good. Here are some pictures I took during the day and some garage glamor shots with the sheath after dark.

Thanks for looking.

E.

all the best,

Jan

Way cool! I love the pin placement and the orange stripe in the sheath seam is a nice touch. Very nicely done!

Verrrrryyy nice work!!! Not only is your friend lucky to be getting the knife, but YOU are lucky to have a friend that deserves such a nice knife. (No, I'm not saying you're lucky to have friends!)

I have a question regarding the front finger notch. From my perspective it seems to me that putting the notch in front of the handle lengthens the blade (by legal definition) but not the cutting edge. A large knife is not intended for fine work, but if one wants to choke up on the blade to do so they HAVE to use the notch without the benefit of a handle to smooth over the square corners of the steel. It seems like it could be hard on the fingers if done for any length of time. Please enlighten me.

Outstanding work! I like what you did with the pins and the sheath, the knife is clean, clean.

Hey Paul,

You make good points. I was originally going to bring the edge all the way back, but I decided I wanted to move the cutting edge away from the front finger a bit. The blade is long enough that I wasn't worried about losing cutting edge length. I envision most of the cutting happening in the last 3". I looked at a lot of choppers on google and liked the look of that huge choil/finger groove.

It feels good from a control perspective in a choked up grip, but probably isn't great for extended use that way.

Looks great! The orange accent in the sheath is a nice touch that really ties the whole package together!

Damn man....you just can't ask for a nicer package than that.
