like the title says i was bored with the BRG zdp endura so i took it apart to see what it would like with the red scales. forgive my ingnorance of the correct terms of the different parts if i mess them up.
i took both of them apart and put one back together before i grabbed the camera. i didnt want to document a snafu if i couldnt get them to work.

first 2 pics are of one completed knife and all the parts of the other one. there are three different type of screws (2 sets have the same diameter but different length and the last is a larger diameter along with a washer for the pivot pin of the blade)

the next pic is of one side of the scale along with the liner and the pins inserted into the hole. the pins are flat on one side to keep them from spinning when you put the screw into them and tighten them down. (the larger one is for the pivot of the blade)

the next pic is of the plastic piece being put on top of the 3 pins (this holds the spring in place)

the next pic jumps ahead (the intermediate pics didnt turn out good) so here is what you do. put the washer for the blade down on the big pin. place the blade on the pin, in the open position then place the other washer on top of the blade. place the lockbar in position and mandhandle the spring into place w/o having it shoot across the room (it happened 3x for me).

this pic just shows the liner being put on next. after that all thats left is to put the other scale on and the clip.

the next two are of the finished product. it only took maybe 10-15 minutes total and that was while i was watching deadliest catch so i think it can be done by almost anybody here with the right torx bits.

I too like to fiddle around with my knives (and guns) and make them my own. Sometimes these projects go poorly, ending with regrets. Most times I am satisfied with the results. I have done what you have, Tony, with a Delica4--I put a "waved" blade into Digital Green scales. I had the help of a thread over on Spyderco's own forum.

I have been led to believe that scale swaps on the Endura4 is more challenging, but you indicate from your fine post and pictures that it's about as easy as the same as on the Delica.

You can do what you wish on your own knife, but I personally wouldn't put red scales on a live blade. Spyderco traditionally uses red scales to flag a trainer knife. It's not an issue unless you seek knife SD training from a professional.

Thanks for the pictures and info. I'm waiting on the arrival of a ZDP Endura, on which I plan to have a friend blacken the blade and lockbar. Your posts will help.

i have one of the first enduras in red and i liked the look so i went with it. i only use this knife when i am at the firehouse so i dont mind it it gets noticed a bit more plus if i am using it at night on a scene it makes it a lil easier to find it it gets dropped. im glad you like the pics. it really is a pretty simple swap.
