Has anyone here ever gotten fired for "defacing a floral arrangement"? I got this stupid idea to cut a coworkers flowers up after she made it clear she didn't want them. They fired me for it. WOW! I must be the first person in history to have that happen. Oh well, I've got a few new positions waiting for me elsewhere. What a weird story.

Well that didn't sound like the smartest thing to do. I think they fired you for your lack of judgement. The key to surviving and carrying a knife are to be very discrete. It's probably a liability issue. For example, if one day you're cutting up someone's flowers (what possessed you to do that anyway?) and the next day you're cutting up a customer, the customer's lawyer could say that your company had prior knowledge of your propensity to wield a blade and thus should pay millions of dollars to the poor customer. Yeah I'm reaching here but just trying to make a point. I guess that point would be to keep your knife in your pocket unless you have a reasonable use for it. Maybe it's just me but cutting up someone's flowers is weird.

"Defacing a floral arrangement"

I'm guessing you went Steven Segal on those flowers whilst they were still on her table and in the basket - with everybody watching. :D

I appreciate your honesty !!! It helps to remind me (as does the recent "Angelina" threads) to stop and THINK before I respond here...and recall that in particular this part of the forum is populated by quite a few very young members.....that patience, tolerance, and understanding are called for when commenting on these pre-teen's postings. :D And may I say...shame on your former employer for hiring someone under the age of twelve !...and of course...we are all reminded cogently........again........why children ought not be allowed to "play" with knives.

wow, that ranks up there as one of the stupidest things to do at a workplace. unfortunately, a small portion of the population keeps doing things like this with a total lack of judgement... so it wont come as a shock to me when knives are flat out banned from all workplaces.

Well it sounds like your poor judgement could in fact have a silver lining after all. Knives are not toys and there is a great chance that you might have learned a valuable lesson out of this ordeal. Unfortunately this will probably float around after you when it comes to a job reference. Just in case the lesson wasn't properly learned; there is an exercise you could try to help gain a better perspective and remember not to do this in the future, and maybe even help you learn a little better respect for knives and coworkers property even if they don't want it.

1. Stand with both feet about 12 - 18 inches apart.

2. With your right hand firmly grasp you left ear lobe.

3. With your left hand firmly grasp your right ear lobe.

4. Pull with all your strength until you hear a loud audible popping sound.

This will complete the exercise by removing your head from your ass and allowing for future improved train of though.

Peace,

Gramps, I think you nailed it. I would guess that the firing was based on a perception of immature behavior and poor decision making. If an employee decides that cutting up a bunch of flowers for no good reason is a good idea, then God only knows what they'll do with relation to serving a customer or client. Sorry Steve - we all make mistakes and we do learn from them.

I want to know what kind of knife was used. On the off chance I may need to deface a floral arrangement, I want to use a proven design.

De-animation of a co-workers property (wanted or unwanted) sends the message of very poor judgment, if only for a minute. Thankfully you did not have a firearm at the time of attack. We have all done stupid things for one reason or another, learn from it and move on.

...no doubt Cliff Stamp will be along soon with the results of some exhaustive testing on "woody" floral stems and the like.....I am anxious for the
technical information that will relegate frame locks and such to the "near useless" category.....thorough side by side tests will unlock the truth !! Tortuous torquing tests will surely exile improperly heat treated blades to the scrap heap......I expect to read phrases like "the Bark Rivers were ineffective on the tough stalks of Gerber Daisies and the fiberous pith of tea roses." I will be disappoined if his commentary is not accompanied by at least one photo of him "batoning" a blade through the stamen of a petunia. :) :) ;) ;)

Well Gramps, you had me going right along with you there until the word pith. We are unlikely to ever see the word pith in one of Cliff's reviews.

Steve, what were you thinking?

What kind of knife did you use and how did it perform. That's all we really want to know. ;)

One thing it certain...He didn't use a sebenza. One of those suckers would have surely folded on his fingers and he'd be reporting his loss of job and fingers from the hospital!

Universally stupid, Dude.

Well guys, it might not be adequate, :D but I cant´t stop laughing when reading this thread. :D
Have you ever seen "Sledge Hammer" on TV. Here you go.........

You havn´t used an Ontario RTAK or a Battle Mistress btw.?

I've been EDC'ing for many years now and in the presence of co-workers (especially in an office/executive/technical-"suit-type-place")ALWAYS be VERY discrete. There has been many times when I have deliberately looked for a pair of scissors in an office to "cut something" when my own Griptilian/BM710 etc was resting in my pocket unoticed and unused..why?Because of the presence of other co-workers(many women, some gay, almost all non-knife people, and some higher-ups) and my first instinct to pull out and use my very sharp EDC would not have left a good impression on these folks.Use caution and discretion as most people are not Knifeknuts and all it takes is a complaining call/e-mail to Human Resources for you to be fired on various grounds("poor-judgment,co-workers feel threatened/uncomfortable,carrying a deadly weapon, etc")All nonsense but that's the reality of the world and the work place.

Ok we don't have enough info on this to make the following statement BUT I am going to make it anyway.

I am guessing you did not find that the coworker did not want the flowers so you cut off the stems too allow it to more easily fit into the trash can. It sounds as if you found out that the co worker did not want the flowers so you proceeded to put on a show hacking them up with your pocket knife. I can not imagine what compelled you to start cutting up someone elses property regardless if they wanted it or not,. what were you trying to accomplish? At any rate if the above is true you can relax a little bit in the knowledge that it was not the knife that got you fired, it was really poor judgement and acting like a dumb ass.

Wow, I know sometimes I comment that I wish I had another car. Mine is almost to small for me to drive comfortably and I say I hate it and wish I dodnt have it. I guess I will keep my trap shut from now on for fear of some idiot taking the liberty of destroying it for me.
