I got my 12" Sirupati...

I got my 12" Sirupati that was Uncle's "give away".

Initial impressions:
I feel freaking sorry for the guy who messes with her.
Just a hint of a distell taper.
Handle is just 7/8" at widest point and 13/16" thick.

OAL 12.5"
Bolster to butcap 4"
blade 8"

Needs a little work to get scary sharp, and a little bit more to get full body shiver.

The sheath is of the new leather, and holds her right by the bolser. Not too loose, not too tight...juuuust right.

Oh yeah...the 'rust' on the blade. There is no rust, just a couple or of spots that might be 1mm wide and long. The spots look like where the kamis didnt grind the blade long enough to remove some of the shallow 'ruts' caused when the steel was pushed from one area of the blade to another.

The spots are so tiny that it took me a minute to find them.

Unbelieveable deal... remarkable piece of work.

If you want to carry it, try a breafront upside down kydex sheath on a JSP Associate harness. Kydex and khuks don't look good togheter, but they surely work well.

Fit an unwashed sheepskin on both the inside and out. Makes the kydex look better, anything will in my opinion, and keeps the khukuri from rusting.

Kydex does have its place I admit and some scabbard designs don't look all that bad either, actually I think some are excellent looking both in form and function.
BUT, again in my opinion, there's nothing that can or will ever take the place of a nice heavy vegetable tanned leather sheath done up the way it should be.
Saddle sewn with recessed threads, and preferably a good flax thread and no snaps on a retaining strap for me personally, and it doesn't even need any tooling although sometimes a nice tooling job will set something off even more beautifully.
I'm a big fan of , who is it that does Daniel Winklers sheaths, Karen Shook I want to say but don't remember for sure? Anyone?
She does the nicest work I've ever seen but I think there may be another lady who's now doing sheaths in a similar style that's not too shabby herself.
Actually I thought it was Karen's(?) work the 1st time I saw her work.
I would love to see one of her sheaths, scabbards, as the case may be, just to see how strong they're made.
I s'pose they're really not all that practical with all the gee dads and fringe on them but no matter to me I still like them.

And what some people might not know or have even considered is that the knives that Daniel Winkler makes are some of the finest in bladesmithy, bar none.
To make something that looks like a real period piece like Mr.Winkler does you have to be skilled enough to compete with the say clean lines of a Henry Bowie, some of the finest ever made. Mr.Henry once said, "When it comes to Bowies I have no peers."
I used to concur, not so sure I would anymore with many of the new makers that have learned off the experience of the ones who came first.

Dave what's the grain like on the new leather. Walosi was also bragging it up.

I'm really anxious to see his/their work.
I think the nicest scabbard I have is the one with my Hanuman Special. I've always thought it must be a piece of the double shrunken water buffalo that Uncle Bill has said he would like the scabbards covered in once, but the sarkis told him it would add a whole lot to the cost, more than would be feasable.
There's also an added surprise coming along with the Cherokee Rose if things go alright.
I'm keeping my fingers, toes and everything that will, crossed that indeed everything goes as it should so the surprise will come to fruition as well.

The new leather is untooled, thick, and the frog isnt going anywhere in this lifetime without some considerable soaking.I couldent ask for a better bolster/scabbard fit, and the brass chape aint going anywhere without serious convinceing.

I am almost sure this is the same guy who did the scabbard on my Villager BAS. Same leather and basic design, except on the Villager BAS he used rivets.

Maybe I should look into Kydex and a shoulder rig??? I have other plans to do first, but dont get me started on my list. It is too long for this post.

Save it for later nephew. Texas has a 5 1/2" limit on legal carry anyway and you dayumed sure don't need anything to cause pee to rain upon your education.
And when we're young and sometimes dumb we often don't think of the consequences of our actions.

I'm concerned that a shoulder rig would not be looked on as being a friendly way of carry while I was still in school. Try to never do anything that will interfere with your education or your freedom. It's increasingly needed in this world to make a decent living.
Try to get something to do behind a desk or outside if you want it, But whatever you do Don't wear yourself out for employers like I did.

on the carry advice, Dave. Kentucky is one of the few states that allows concealed large knives, and the only one that completely voids other restrictions as to blades with a CCDW permit. That said, the law and the academic establishment forbid weapons on campus (all schools, all weapons) and the schools been known to take action on their own when weapons violations were reported on students off campus. You are just too vulnerable.

Gentlemen,

I know not to bring "excessively large knives" (max length 5.5" by law) on campus. I have a long list of things to do, and learning how to work Kydex is nearing the end of the list.

Besides why bring 12-18" knife when you can get away with carrying a 40" bokken that you train 2 nights a week with. I have certain "privlages" on campus, I dont abuse them, and rarely are they exercised. Most of the faculty in the Business School know me well, they know I collect knives, and they know I DONT bring them on campus. I also have a friend (head of the psycology dept.) who also knows about my hobby, he too is in the Aikido club here.

If this happens, yes I will go quietly... and then (also quietly) they can pay for my education (called a violation of privacy), and my little sisters education, and anything else I can get from them. I live off campus, in a complex not owned by the school. My knives rarely go anywhere outside my apt., and when they do they stay in a bag till I get to where ever I am going and they are used. I believe I could file a suit under the 3rd, and 4th amendments.

The 4th is "The right of the people to be secure in their persons, houses, papers, and effects, against unreasonable searches and seizures, shall not be violated, and no Warrants shall issue, but upon probable cause, supported by Oath or affirmation, and particularly describing the place to be searched, and the persons or things to be seized."

My lease says nothing about collections, or works of art, and neither does the off campus policy.

I know all too well about "gun grabbers" and "isnt that too big to be carried" people (...yeah...I am in Tx...nobody's safe anymore). Did I mention that I turn 21 in Feb???
