I was heart broken, and i was moping the rest of the day. when I got home i started browsing HI looking for the one I wanted next, i came across the sirupati family and found hat the 18 inch siru was th same price as the ang khola, being a rather impatent guy i replied to Yangdu's email

if you have any in stock, and if it would be possible, you could send me an 18 inch sirupata instead, since its the same price

(yes i realize i spelled sirupati wrong)

to which she replied

Will ship you the 18 inch Siruapti tomorrow.

Thank you

the khukuri came in on wedsday while I was at work, so my friend that was crashing at my house brought the package to me.

I didnt open it till i got home that day

now on to the review

it had a tiny bit of rust near the edge but easily came off
the bade is THICK the thikest knife ive ever had
now i dont know f all khukuris come like this, but the finish has scratch marks all over it, not even a problem for me, its a work knife, and for some reason it jsut makes it look even better(to me anyways)
im not sure what kami made it but im pretty sure it was jag and prem, it has 4 marks on it, 3 i didnt recognize but it did have the sun on it
theres some beutiful gold inlay in the fuller
the handle has a tiny crack in it, i was told buy some friends its because its horn, the handle is beutiful, there are places where white shows through from the horn which looks realy nice
the sheath is alot better quality than i expected, although the karda and chama dont fit in properly, kinda tight fit(yes i realize its upposed to be tight, but its too tight)
the karda came deadly sharp, even sharper than the khukuri itself, although i not sure if the karda and chama are full tang, itd be nice if HI sold spares jsut in case the handles failed or you lost one
the siu handles nicely, we tried chopping some of the wood in the backyard and had a really hard time with the first log, it was so hard even the chainsaw had problems, we managed to get through a different one with no problems, although the noise mad the neighbors dog bark, and it was a really annoying bark
not a big fan of the brass bolster, would prefer silver, but the handle is going to be replaced wih polyurithane anyways
the handle doesnt absorb shock very well, my hand was numb all day from using it
I love my siru, im going to try and get one of the khukuris from each family, my friend is even letting me make a payment on the computer i bought from him with a bilton(hes left handed so i might ask for a lefty sheath)
I look forward to buying more of these in the future(will put up pictures later)

Welcome to the H.I forums, atlas!!!
Sorry you were not able to get your Ang Khola, you would've been impressed by it's toughness and chopping ability. There will always be time for you to get one later.
The Sirupati's are very nice but they are more weapon than chopper, they work fine for brush clearing and limbing trees but lack the forward heft of the AK,WWII or BAS models which are built for serious chopping.
If you want a silver colored bolster, look for one with white metal or steel. Some khukuri come with real silver hardware but this is much too soft for hard EDC work and is best left to display models. The inlay on the fuller is Brass that is hammered into the design within the fuller, almost all siru's come with this feature and alot of us agree it really makes the blades look really nice.
For info on who made your blade you can ask Yangdu or post us some pics and we'll try to help you figure it out. For starters though, you might want to check these threads and the Kami mark guide on the H.I. website.

Welcome:D

It sounds to me like you would REALLY enjoy an 18" AK in a villager finish. I know I love that look. You'd get a lot more chopping performance out of the AK, the finish would be more of a satiny brushed than a polished look, the bolsters, buttplate, and keeper usually come in "white metal" which is some sort of nickle silver.

As for the chakma and karda failing, in seven years of collecting and using I have not wrecked either one yet. The kamis really know how to make a robust accessory knife:thumbup:

I like your wish list:) I had a similar one. At last check, I have over 30 pieces with another 20 having been gifted. I'm still not done:D

Once again, welcome! Pull up a chair and stick around!

LOL, sorry, but this struck me as funny because you originally wanted an Ang Khola, and were surprised at how thick one of the thinnest models is! ;)

First thing you'll learn with HI is to throw out the book as far as classifying the size of blades. At most forums a 10" blade with a 1/4" thickness is a huge sharpened prybar monstrosity. Here, it's a short, lightweight knife. :D

If you were a bit disappointed by the Siru's chopping ability, don't worry, they really aren't made to be heavy choppers. However, I've never been disappointed by an Ang Khola, they're monsters in the chopping arena. A good second choice. BTW, watch the deals of the day, especially the next few. When one of us whines "Boy would I like to find an X", yangdu often makes one or a few pop up as a deal of the day. ;)

Oh, if your hand was sore from using the Siru, you were probably holding it too tight. The best way I've found (YMMV), is to hold tight with the ring and pinky finger, with the ridge of the handle between the two, and loosely with the index and middle finger. As you chop, just a bit before the blade makes contact, make a lashing movement with your wrist, like cracking a whip. The loose grip means less shock transfer, and the "whip" motion increases the blade speed just before impact.

Be sure to read the safety sticky at the top of the forum.

Welcome aboard.

ha ha, ill keep that in mind, since im not a fan of high polish finish on something im taing out in the field, one less thing to worry about

The Sirupati isn't a power chopper like the Ang Khola, but it's downright deadly to multiflora rose and vines.

What's up buddy, it's Justin. Welcome to the forums and HIKV. I'm glad to know we're spreading it through our little group haha. Erik is next with his Falcata I hope.

ok so update, its been about 2 weeks since i got the siru and heres a status report
1. i have deemed it useless for cutting large pieces of wood, although it worked perfectly on the bannana and palm tee in the backyard
2. so far if cracked the handle in 2 places, from pommel almost to the guard
3.banged up the back of the blade battoning wood and breaking hard objects(coconuts lol) just minor dents in the spine
4. still havent managed to get the shinny finish off, any tips would be nice
5. got a couple rust spots neer the tip
6. rolled the edge, then later restored it
7. slightly rolled the edge neer the tip from miss hits
7.still havent figured out which kami made it(tried to get a picture up but my camera is like 8 years old and refuses to cooperate with photobucket
8. found that sesami oil is useless
9. got my father hooked on my siru(he was all sure his little hand axe would work better, wwell ho hum to him haha)
10. figured out how to properly throw this monstrsity
11. lost my other knife in my bacyard while throwing it, the brush is so thick back there, and the blade is blued mat black

i hope a decent chopper apears on dotd around thursday this week(18 inch gelbu or ak pleeeeeeeeaaaasssseeeeeeee???)

will try and get pictures up of the marking somehow

While the spine may be thick enough the siru really doesnt have the blade mass or profile to be a serious chopper, even a 18 inches, it is best to use them for brush clearing and limbing. You can take care of bigger limbs with that size though, than with the smaller ones.

It probably cracked all the way up the handle because you were throwing it. Kukri's are not boomerangs or throwing knives. especially the ones with horn handles, as it tends to crack/split/break upon impact with the target.

Scotch brite pad.
the useless atlas said:
and id also like to know if the chakmaand karda are full tang
No they are not.

1.) Stop throwing it.
2.) Use mineral oil if you want to coat it, or wipe it with a silicone cloth.
3.) If you want the shiny finish gone you can:
- rub it with a scotch brite pad
- wipe it down with mineral spirits or rubbing alcohol to remove any residual oil and submers the blade (not the handle) in vinegar for a couple of hours, or wipe it down with cold blue solution to patina the blade.
4.) Stop throwing knives. Seriously.
5.) If you want an AK email Yangdu and ask her if she has one like the one in a DOTD (she might give it to you at the same price), or ask if she has a villager for sale -- they're cheaper and usually come sharper, and not polished.
