I got my KA-BAR short bowie via UPS today.The model number and a taiwan stamp is on the blade.What i want to know is what kind of steel this blade is made of. I have only been buying knives for about ten months so there is alot i dont know.So your help would be appreciated. I cant wait to take this knife out in the woods and do some chopping with it.:D
 
Thanks alot siguy.I was just told by OmegaJuicebox that it is made of 1085.He suggested keeping it well oiled so it doesnt rust.
 
it may be 1085 just as well, i'm not really sure...

keep it oiled, but don't stress it. even if you do get rust spots, they will rub off with use. just keep it dry and sharp, and it should perform for years.
 
It's 1085, siguy is correct. It's got the coating so it's not going to 'rust just by looking at it', but when not in use I'd keep a thin layer of oil on it.
 
FWIW, I would suggest using Mineral Oil. It is food safe and won't spoil.
