I got my Opinel #7 today, good news! My dog ate it. Bad news.

Get yourself a membership level so i can pm you...could get you a free new Opinel.

For the cost, I d replace it with a new one.
And as my family would tell you, I m the last one to throw away anything.
Give the dog a chew bone.

Either chuck it, or if you like a challenge try Minwax stainable wood filler. I'd probably sand the whole thing then stain it ebony to hide the grain mismatch. Quick and cheap. Good luck!

I like the idea of fixing in it, just for the experience and we get to see some cool pics. The stag handle mod looked really cool too.

Great news, OP. Take your dog’s hint and ditch the Opinel. Buy a decent knife instead! :p

;) Dogs love Opinel for different reasons than humans :D

Chewtoy! :D

I know there are better knives than the Opinel and I own a few like a couple of ZDP-189 Enduras and a PM-2 (love that one), a few Leeks, couple Moras up in size to a RAT-7 that I got on sale then onto a 22" D-handle Ontario machete and things I know I can't think of. Why Opinel? It kicks butt as a striker for a ferrorod and it's sharp enough to do whatever a light blade should IMO. It's friggin dirt cheap and if I lose it oh well. This beater (or "eater" perhaps) seems to present an opportunity for learning something new.

Thanks all and don't stop with ideas. I'm new to hands-on works other than edges and I'm keen (pun intended) to do more. Once the garage AKA shop gets above polar bear comfort zone I'll give rehandling/repair a try.

Opinels are awesome. Nothing slices like an Opinel. They are super light, and I find the handles to be really comfortable.

Here's my well-used No. 7 (with a Case Peanut). As well as my box set with all of the sizes.

The Opinels I like best are the ones your wife got you. Such a great present, seeing the photo makes me smile. But, a pox on all other Opinels! ;)

Haha. Thanks, and I agree that was an amazing gift.

But what don't you like about Opinels? They are classic, work great, have reliable locks, and simply slice like the dickens! Love them :D

Sand it down, lock it open and use it as a kitchen paring knife. And get another for your pocket. I melted a dollop of floor wax (Johnson) into the blade slot of my #8, and worked it all around the handle to keep the wood from swelling and binding the blade. Simple solution, works great.

I’m kidding, they are lovely in their own way, but as a European they are somewhat cheap vanilla. :)

I want to let people know that someone here did me a kindness I had not anticipated. I was sent a gift, an Opinel Arpege 2013, INOX. I had given a #10 to my son who uses it daily in his school townhouse kitchen when he cooks. Someone sent me a replacement, but as you see it is no ordinary #10, and it came at a time when it could not be more appreciated. The gift was an act of spontaneous goodwill and generosity and so to mention the name of the individual might be inappropriate as it wasn't done with public fanfare.

The bottom line is the unexpected general tenor of the forum and of the people I've associated with in my short time here. Thanks all!

I'd cut it off at the chewed up area, attach a piece of visually contrasting wood and shape.
