Well apparantly none of my coworkers are smokers. We had a BBQ planned at work for our small swing shift crew. Had the meat, salad, grill and charcoal but no one had matches or a lighter! Well even I was caught without a Bic so out to my truck for my gear :) Snagged my firesteel and fatwood out of the kit and had flame in under 30 seconds :D Supervisor was impressed with my little firesteel and kit. Never know when or what type of disaster is gonna hit. Glad I was prepered this time

Nice work Bill.

It pays to be prepared. On one rare occasion I wasn't. I stopped by a buddy's camp for a visit one time. He and his family were just heading out on his boat, so I jumped in. We headed across the lake to a sandy beach on the other side.

After a few beers we decide to cook up some dogs on their gas grill. That's when we discovered nobody had a match or lighter! How to make a spark strong enough to light the grill??? While looking around the boat for something, I found a set of jumper cables under one of the seats. We hooked them up to the battery, turned on the gas on the grill, and touched 'em together quickly to make the spark and light the small grill.

Worked like a charm! Smartest thing to do? Probably not, but what the hell. We were hungry.

BTW, I'm a shift work commando too. Nights suck!

Lucky you. Whenever I tell people that I'm going to start a fire at work, I get an e-mail reminder that our insurance does cover mental health.

Man that could have been a real serious situation if it wasn't for your quick thinking !

For some reason it reminds me of a W.C.Fields quote...

" Reminds me of my safari in Africa.Somebody forgot the corkscrew and for several days we had to live on nothing but food and water ! ":D:thumbup:

Raw chicken isn't something I wanted to deal with.....we could have died or worst :D

Your kit had firesteel and fatwood but no matches or lighter? Sure you weren't showing off, just a little? Either way, nice work.
