I had the pleasure of visiting with RJ Martin in his shop this evening!! :D:D I can not thank him enough!! It was an absolute THRILL for me. I got to see the RJ work on some knives. knife making is quite fascinating!! I got to see the CNC machine in action. I got to see the bearing system that he uses, how he makes his knives!! I have a DEEP appreciation of what a knife maker does to make a knife. I LOVED it and want to see more!! RJ was kind enough to invite me back too. I can't wait!!!! RJ, THANK YOU seems sooooooooo inadequate, but it is the best I can do!!! :D:D:D:D

Thats really cool! Does he live sorta near you or was it a long trek??

Happy for you!

Been there, done that. :p  ;)

RJ is the consumate knifemaker--always ready to help and advise and his doors ARE truly open. I spent an entire day with him a couple of years ago. His shop is tight, equipped, and efficient.

Did he pop out a couple of CNC folders while you watched? ;)

OK, Suz.... What's on order? :D

He lives relatively close to me; about and hour & 15 mins.

He popped out some Havoc onlays whilst I was there. I got to handle 2 Havocs. I had a grand time!!

No, I didn't take any pix. I may ask if I CAN take pix next time I go.

I have nothing on order. I DO very badly want a Zing & a black & green Havoc however.

RJ is a wealth of information for sure, as well as a great guy;)

However, after you watch RJ grind out a blade, you become depressed by how easy he makes it look :p

I brought a knife I was making to his shop when I visited 1 time - I just couldn't get the grinds even, no matter what I did. (it was flat ground) He looked it over for about 2 minutes, changed his platen (since he usually hollow grinds) and fixed it in about a minute!!!!

that's one of the reasons I get a laugh when I see people bring up CNC and the like - not only can he PROGRAM a CNC, which is not trivial, but unless you see him in action, you have no idea how slick he is at "the basics" !

we are lucky that there are guys like him around...AND he's a Yankees fan - (apologies to the Sox fans here :D)
