Hey guys. Have you ever seen a peice of thread hanging off your pants, shorts, or shirt and you have a knife on you? And in your head your saying, " Oh look! A peice of thread, better get that." But the truth is you just want to show off your badas* knife haha.

No, not really. Cutting threads never makes me feel like my knife is "bad." Unless a Vic Classic is, because it does that just fine with mutiple tools.

Not a good idea to show off, especially a badass knife ( whatever that means), there is enough problem with people's perception of someone carrying a knife, it reaffirms the adolescent mall ninja behavior that many perceive with knife enthusiasts. Discretion and responsible behavior is a good thing, showing off not so good.

500 pound gorilla in the room.

If you whip out some "badass" stabinator out of your pocket to trim a little piece of thread off your clothing...people aren't scared. If anyone doesn't know what they are thinking, ask your grandmother or older sister. One of them will give you the lowdown.

It's that kind of immature show off nonsense that gives all of us knife people a bad name. But way worse than that, it can have very unforeseen consequences. So you whip out your badass ego boasting knife and cut off a thread. You freak out some old lady who has the opinion that people shouldn't carry knives. She goes home and writes a letter to both her senator and congressman. They get her letter, and in a spurt of public relations make a speech how they're going to do something about that. And they go and draft legislation to ban certain knives. Don't laugh, it's been done just like that. See what happened to switch blades after James Dean made them famous, and a certain U.S. senator needed a notch on his campaign wagon.

If you are carrying a knife, then you are an ambassador for the knife world to the rest of the world that not only does not carry a knife, but are leery of us that do. You can, with a single moment of dumb behavior, have repercussions that can go on to affect us all. The Knife Rights group does good work, but why make things harder for them and us. Keep your knife in your pocket and act like a grown up.

Discretion is good.

I usually burn loose threads off, although I will occasionally cut them. No one even bats an eye if I do so. I don't really care if people get freaked out while I am doing a task with my knife. I can legally carry one and their isn't anything they can do about that. I've had people look freaked out while cutting up an apple with an Opinel, so I have sort of given up on the sheeple.

I"m generally not the "hey look what I've got" show off type person. If I do see that a thread needs to be trimmed or something, I try to be as discreet as possible about trimming it. Whether I be using my 4" Hogue EX-01 or my little Spydie dragonfly. If I wanted to show off I'd pull down my pants.

Damn guys, I for 1 love to do that. I seize every chance i get to use my knives. I googled "badass" and it can mean excellent, so sure i like to use my badass knives. I dont go out to scare people but im not going to deprive myself of my beautiful knife just because people are gonna look at me funny.

In addition to my EDC, I always carry a small knife (Peanut/Pemberton) and my Gerber Shortcut (small multi-tool with scissors). If a thread needs cutting, I pull out the Shortcut and use the scissors to cut said thread. No one gets worried, no ones gets upset and it IS the right tool for the job.

JMO. :)

Some possibly harsh responses here that may or may not be warranted depending on what the OP meant by bad*ss. That said, I cut threads, etc all the time but with discretion. I use my small Vic Midnight Minichamp or Spyderco Ladybug. I prefer to keep my bigger knives in pocket unless I need them for bigger tasks.

To the OP, I don't know how old you are and what the knife culture is around your parts but for a lot of people, whipping out big bad knives for small mundane tasks may be perceived as overkill and draw unwanted attention. If you're young and even have no bad intentions with your knives, there are people that frown upon them and you're potentially putting yourself at risk. Show off your knives with your like-minded buddies and maybe get a smaller more people-friendly knife for those other tasks. It's probably better to not show all your "cards" in terms of what you're carrying unless you have to. Just my 2 cents. Stay safe!

I think some of you guys are being a little hard on him. As a knife enthusiast all of us have had times where we have felt some sort of gratification in having the opportunity to use our knife for some task that presents itself. Especially if your around your family or good friends and not a bunch of strangers you may scare.

and a "Badass" knife could just mean a very nice knife, it doesn't necessarily mean a big huge tactical knife.

Lighten up guys

I used to carry one of my David Yellowhorse buck112, that I,d use for task,s like thread cutting,
Most people even old ladys just would comment on how beautiful it was.

Thought I,d add just recently we returned a treadmill that came with missing parts to walmart,
the security was bitching about us parking too long in front of the store, so I cut the rope to speed things up, with my spyderco matriarch, I said I had a knife and was going to cut it, but still the associate helping took a step back like it was a snake,,,,, asked why I would carry something so Dangerous, from now on I carry a more sheep friendly knife for public tasks.
