Some possibly harsh responses here that may or may not be warranted depending on what the OP meant by bad*ss. That said, I cut threads, etc all the time but with discretion. I use my small Vic Midnight Minichamp or Spyderco Ladybug. I prefer to keep my bigger knives in pocket unless I need them for bigger tasks.
To the OP, I don't know how old you are and what the knife culture is around your parts but for a lot of people, whipping out big bad knives for small mundane tasks may be perceived as overkill and draw unwanted attention. If you're young and even have no bad intentions with your knives, there are people that frown upon them and you're potentially putting yourself at risk. Show off your knives with your like-minded buddies and maybe get a smaller more people-friendly knife for those other tasks. It's probably better to not show all your "cards" in terms of what you're carrying unless you have to. Just my 2 cents. Stay safe!
Well, most everyone around my area, and even some further, carry knives all the time. I once saw a girl in her 20's carring one cipped to her back pocket. I dont usuallu carry "huge knives", I may have once or twice, but I never whip them out considering whats been going on latley, at that, I never have whipped a big knife out but to only show it to my freinds and such. I usally carry a CRKT M16 for edc. I don't pull my knives in public, but at my house and my dads shop I do. I only pull a knife in public when something needs done.
And this is why I felt some may have jumped the gun on you and come down a bit harsh! Your environment, demeanor, etc are important when exposing tools that many perceive only as weapons. Common sense and discretion are your best friends here. Glad to know that you weren't referring to inappropriate actions that would only paint you with a negative brush.
It's that kind of immature show off nonsense that gives all of us knife people a bad name. But way worse than that, it can have very unforeseen consequences. So you whip out your badass ego boasting knife and cut off a thread. You freak out some old lady who has the opinion that people shouldn't carry knives. She goes home and writes a letter to both her senator and congressman. They get her letter, and in a spurt of public relations make a speech how they're going to do something about that. And they go and draft legislation to ban certain knives. Don't laugh, it's been done just like that. See what happened to switch blades after James Dean made them famous, and a certain U.S. senator needed a notch on his campaign wagon.
If you are carrying a knife, then you are an ambassador for the knife world to the rest of the world that not only does not carry a knife, but are leery of us that do. You can, with a single moment of dumb behavior, have repercussions that can go on to affect us all. The Knife Rights group does good work, but why make things harder for them and us. Keep your knife in your pocket and act like a grown up.
Discretion is good.
I whipped out my bad monkey today on the wave in a room with 2 women in it to take the back off my phone. One was a sales person, and the other IT and neither even blinked an eye at it. I didn't act or feel like I was doing anything wrong, and neither of them ran from the room screaming. Sometimes I don't understand all the tip-toeing around some people feel the need for.

A lot of the time it seems like luck of the draw. Some people freak out at the slightest thing, others are "Meh, he's got a knife." I've personally never experienced a person freaking out when I pulled out a knife but I think that's likely because I'm conservative when using it. I've had young nephews and nieces ask why I carry knives but I just educate them on their uses, and they understand the validity, especially when I'm helping them cut the ribbons of presents or opening a toy package or something for them.
Yup, what I said.![]()
Quite the contrary... I wasn't showing it off, I needed something to pry with and had a knife in my pocket so I used it. If you never use it why the hell do you carry it?
Should I have asked them politely to turn around so I could use something they didn't want to see to open it? Would that really be better?
Thanks for all the responses guys. Harsh or not, I just wanted to see if you guys maybe did the same. As for "badass" knife, I meant a very nice knife, ...
I guess I should be open to the possibility that things are a little different in the deep south than they are in the phillipines. I assure you I didn't offend anyone or hurt our great hobby.
Women around here have been known to get John Deer tattoos and wear fixed blades on their hips. It's all good and a different environment than I'm sure you're used to.
Cheers.
Like one in your collection that you shared a picture of.Glad to hear in the course of this thread you have gone from relishing how awesome it would be to whip out your badass knife to being respectful and careful. That's a step forward. Like it or not, each time you use a knife in public you are representing all the rest of us.
I'll let everybody else go on about the "sheeple" and "I'll do whatever I want wherever I want, its 'merica" stuff.
But. You whip out a "badass" knife (I've been around long enough to know that when you say "badass" it refers to one in your collection) to cut off a thread, people are thinking "adolescent overcompensation." And that reflects on all of us.
