I Grossly Underestimated this Blade

I finally caved and bought one of the venerable 110s, and it's SCARY how sharp this thing is. i just gently pushed on the edge with my thumb and it started to cut through my skin. my katana didn't even come this sharp. i've been falling deeper into the abyss of blade collecting for years, and this is the first time i've ever described a blade as "scary sharp." now i'm tempted to check out one of Buck's fixed blade knives. OH NO; I THINK I MIGHT HAVE .... BUCK-ITIS!!! HIDE MY WALLET!!

PS. PICS!!!

dear darth,
its called buck fever by thoes of us what is affiliated with this condition
there is not cure, you can gain some temportyu relife with
a new to you buck.. but it will hit you again harder
buck feaver is so strong it will make you give up smokeing to have
Buck Money
you will learn the sound of the UPS truck and
head to the door before the wife can get there
you will learn your postman's route so
you can get the packages before he gets to your house..

sit down and know you are not alone
here you are with friends and we understand!
here is about half of my herd (naw make that 2/3's to 3/4)

I never cut myself with my other knives, but I seem to find a way to cut myself with my 110's .. It sure doesn't require much effort.

The 110 was the first knife I carried on a regular basis, back in the late 70s.I packed it for several years. Then I don't know what happened,I just kind of moved on.Spyderco came out in the late 80s and Cold Steel earlier than that.Well needless to say,I went tactical for many years.I signed up in the forums a few months back and started reading a few of the Buck threads.Guys like Flatlander and Babakanoosh were showing off their Buck custom shop 110s.So,I had one made with an S30V blade, now I'm hooked all over again.Just got this one last week and am already scheaming on another, and yeah it's sharp.

I've just gotten back into Buck in the last month and a half after 6 or so years of being Buck-naked;) With so many super-steels out there and so much selection from so many quality makers, I thought that surely someone had created a knife that could trump the 110, classic though it is.

After picking up a new 110 on a whim at Gander Mountain, I'm not so sure any more. Once I made a pocket sheath for it, I was hooked. Lord knows I've TRIED to rotate others in its place. Spydercos, Kershaws, etc. I reach for them to get a little pocket time, but I nervously tap my fingers before fishing them out of my pocket and slipping the 110 next to my wallet.

A ranger is next on my list. A stout little 3" blade for travel purposes sounds about right:) A custom 110 wouldn't upset me too much either :D:thumbup:

it's so nice to know others are/have gone through what i'm dealing with now. [/Dr Phil guest]

i just remembered that i had a 110 years ago, or at least it LOOKED like a 110. impossible to say; i haven't seen it in years -probably threw it out at some point.

this new knife came with a nylon sheath,:barf: so i'm headed to the craft store for a leather kit. don't like having anything in my pockets. if it wouldn't make me look like the batman i'd belt-carry everything.

Is that nylon sheath by chance both horizontal and vertical carry? I might have an extra leather one laying around if so....

it appears to be, though my belts are too wide to carry it horizontal. if you want it i'll send it to ya for five dollars and shipping. already bought a leather sheath though. Hobby Lobby wanted an outrageous 15 dollars for a sheath kit(and no tool grade leather apart from kits), so i went to the local knife store and got a nice Schrade sheath for $5. really, it shouldn't cost three times as much to make something yourself as to buy it. i really should oil it, but the plain leather just smells so damn yummy i don't wanna.
am i weird for just sniffing a leather sheath for five minutes?

while i was there i also checked out the Buck fixed hunter, but the handle was a bit too big, so back to my CS SRK.

Back in the early 70's when I was but a sprout, my uncle and all his motorcycle riding buddies all carried buck 110's on their belts.
Me being the impressionable sort that I was, and aspiring for coolness embarked on a lawn mowing spree, and hoarding my paper route money like it was my life.
Well I bicycled my way over to the Mom and Pop outdoor store/gun store/ fishing bait/gas station, and purchased my first ever legitimate knife with folding money. A Buck 110 folding hunter, I was THE MAN.
Old Mr. Wintrow explained to me that this here was a mans knife and not to be fooled around with like a 2$ Barlow, and if he saw me acting like a knucklehead with it he would be sure that my mom took it from me.
Whoever stole my tackle box off of my back porch in 1976 got my favoritest knife in the whole world, and I hope that they died a painful death.
I purchased several more over the years, but not a one of them ever meant as much to me as that first one that I ever owned all on my own.

My Buck story.

You put a Buck in a schrade Sheath??:eek:...:D

Gee, any number of us would have sent you a leather sheath of some sort that will fit that 110.

Try digging out a belt that runs under 1.5 inches in width and see if that nylon sheath will fit it. Many of us carry the 110 horizontal just for comfort and drag when getting in and out of the cars and trucks. It's almost like it isn't there.

Thanks for the offer on it, but really, try it out before you give it up. You can also toss it in the washing machine (when your wife isn't looking) and it comes out all nice and clean. I just let mine air dry.

I wear nothing but a horizontal when I carry a 110.

Bummer Chuck, I am betting that if you pin down the year you bought that one, there might be some floating around that are sill in good shape.

Sad thing is, one would probably run you three, or more, times what you gave for that first one. And still wouldn't have the "meaning" that first one had.

My first one, was in about that time frame and was retired to a drawer far far away from the rest of the herd.

Living well is the best revenge I once heard, and I now own as many 110s as I think that I will ever need and a few more for good measure, whilst I am sure that the thief is still a thief and hopefully getting some man love in the county lockup!

Does anyone else find themselves searching through the racks of 110s at Wally world or Bass Pro or Gander Mountain looking for one with different wood than the ones you already have? I am a SUCKER for the 29.99 110s.

I went camping this weekend with a group of friends, and got tired of the “Pampered Chef” knives the ladies brought along, to do all of the camp food preparation. I picked up another 110 at the local Walmart. The Buck 110 made short work of a bunch of cauliflower, broccoli, asparagus, red and green peppers, onions, carrots, lettuce, tomatoes, watermelon, and steak (and it looked the part of “camp knife” a whole letter better than the PC). It will be my official food prep camp knife from now on.

i just prefer leather over nylon for sheathes. only reason my CS SRK is still in the original nylon sheath is that it looked kinda "off" in the leather sheath i made.
and horizontal carry would get in the way of my Wave, meaning i'd have to rearrange my belt carry and spend ten thousand years pulling out my cell phone to cut a rope. :p

i wouldn't use a folder for food prep myself because of the difficulty in thoroughly cleaning them. just my take.

ggrrrrr...there's a lot of crap in the world, but stealing a man's tackle box is just out there; you just don't do that. and off your front porch no less, that takes balls.

not just for a different wood pattern but yeah, i do my share of drooling(not so much since the local store switched from having actual knives in the case to a printed display). i usually do the actual buying elsewhere though. i don't really like Walmart that much, even though i do most of my regular shopping there. i think their Unbeatable Low Prices hurt our economy. the other guys really CAN'T beat their prices, and as a result a lot of smaller stores are forced out of business. and they keep those Low Low Prices by getting all their stuff from China etc. so that's a loss to American manufacturers. but this doesn't belong here, so i digress.

PS.
i'm really not a hardcore Made In America fanatic.

Actually the 110 was large enough that I didn't have any problem keeping the food contents out of the inner workings. Simple wipe of the blade was all it took to get it clean. I figured if it's good enough to dress a deer, veggies wouldn't be a problem. Actually, I thought about my 119, but I didn't want to carry a sheath knife for all to see in a state park campground. But as you said, to each his own.:)
