I guess I bought a used K-BAR

Mod it. Here's one I bought sometime between 1990 & 1993 in Hawaii. Modded for a clinometer and a lanyard hole.

Here's one a buddy gave me in Iraq in either 2005 or 2007.

Basically anything you can find with an NSN on it is/was at some point issued.
Not quite. GSA catalog is full of merchandise issued NSNs that were never issue items. Those items are available for unit purchase but aren't necessarily issue items excepting by the unit that purchases them.

Each service, DLA, GSA, DHS, FAA, NATO, other federal agencies and other governments can sponsor a manufacturing vendor. There are over 6 million active NSNs in the Federal Supply System and about 10 million in the NATO system. The vast majority were never issued items. Available for procurement, but not issue items. Manufacturers seek registering their goods to increase business (and rightly so).
