I guess I need to get a Caly 3

Well, I've been a happy Spyderco user for about a month now. I started off with a Dragonfly and then picked up a waved Delica about a week or so ago. I actually like the Dragonfly better for use at work. The flat ground blade seems a bit more efficient for cutting cardboard and plastic wrap, and I like having the choil. But I would also like to have a little bit bigger blade, just in case. So, since I've seen the Dragonfly described as being like a tiny version of the Caly I think that is what my next Spydie needs to be. August has 5 Fridays, which means an extra paycheck this month, which means extra money in my budget for knives! :D Maybe I'll also pick up another Dragonfly or two for backups! ;)

I just ordered the Caly3. I'm excited to try it out and see if its worth the $.

I don't think that there is anything you'll dislike about the Caly 3. I really love mine. I've got a bunch of Spydercos, but if I could only keep two of 'em, they'd be my Caly 3 and my Para-Millie.

The Caly III is an absolutely brilliant design. It's the only knife I've ever considered buying back ups of.

If you get a Caly 3, you should consider SE. It will make a believer out of you. IMHO :D

I like my Calypso Jr ZDP with it very reasonable price, but I may try the Caly3 Carbon when I save up :D

I really like the performance of my carbon fibre Caly 3. To be blunt, it blows away my Small Seb in its' ability to cut. I'm thinking of a G-10 version. The only thing I'd like to see different would be to have a bit more rugged tip, similar to the Delica. I EDC'd a Dragonfly for over a year and this is significantly more knife, in my opinion.

There is no better example of Spyder brilliance than in the Calypso Jr/Caly line, I can't stop buying (and using) them.
The CalyIII is a small, hefty, knife the JR is a light, laser cutter of a knife.
Go for it!

Thanx for the kind words. 3 generations of a design, refined mostly from useage and listening to the comments of afi's.

Thanx much to you.

Another vote for the Caly 3. The size and performance make it my EDC. Even when I am carrying a larger knife, the Cally 3 is still in my left front pocket. Slight profile but big performer.

Love my CF/zdp calypso 3 I got yesterday. Thing pops hairs off above the arm with ease, way sharper than I remember my 1st gen endura being out of the box. The manix I bought as a work knife to complement it really shows off the performance of a wide flat ground blade, where my 710 and endura would bind up in cardboard despite being razor sharp the manix just glided through it like it wasn't even there. The fit and finish on the Caly 3 is incredible, lots of nice little touches too like part of the liners being beveled to ensure the blade closes smoothly.

I do want to try the Spyder Edge, but I think I'll try it on a Dragonfly first. I've never been a fan of serrated blades, and while I know that the Spyder Edge may change my opinion, there is also a chance that it won't, so I'd rather try it on a less expensive knife first.

That's exactly what I've found happening with my Delica. It's not that the Delica is dull or anything, it's just that a flat grind of the Dragonfly makes for a more efficient cardboard cutter.

I got a Calypso Jr. ZDP. I think I liked it; after I used it for the first time, I immediately ordered another. If anybody has both, my question is, how much practical difference is there between the Calypso Jr. and the Calypso 3?

I have both Caly3 and ZDP Calypso Jr. Caly3 I got about 11 month ago and I EDC it every day since than.
It is perfect EDC, in my opinion.:thumbup::thumbup:
ZDP Calypso Jr. I bought in January and it is never became my EDC for a few reasons:
1. I prefer tip up cary
2. I like G10 much better than FRN
3. I like liners
4. I like low riding wire clip
5. I am not crazy about swedge
Good luck.
If you get Caly3, you will never regret

I have both. I can tell you that in my house, the Caly Jr is a drawer queen and the Caly 3 is a user. There is nothing wrong with the Caly Jr, but I don't like featherweight knives. I bought it just to see what all the talk was about. I was pretty sure from the description that I'd not be using it much. Mine is a fine cutter, but just doesn't suit me for carry.

Now then, let's talk about the Caly 3. She was a surprise. I walked into Ruff's Saddle Shop in Umatilla, FL to buy another ZDP D4 and saw this thing sitting in the case. The man let me hold her and I couldn't give her back... so he made me give him some money :D. That's OK... what's money when you're holding a Caly 3?

Practically speaking, the Caly 3 is a very different knife to me than the Caly Jr. They share a common history and some characteristics like a back lock and a flat ground blade, but the liners and scales of the Caly 3 give an entirely different feel to this knife. I always feel like I have more control over a knife with a thicker handle and some weight to it.

The blade also seems thicker and has enough of a different shape to be much more attractive to me than the Caly Jr's blade. It think that it will be a sturdier blade because of the added thickness.

I think of the Caly 3 as the Caly Jr all grown up :p. If you like featherweight knives, the Caly 3 may not be your cup of tea. It's very comfortable in a pocket, but you'll know it's there. OTOH, if you want a tough little knife that has some substance to it and can play over its head with the big boys on occasion, then the Caly 3 will be just what your lookin' for.

Oh well. I like the Calypso Jr. because it is featherlight, etc. From what I am hearing it is the one for me, but I really appreciate the input. Thanks.

Sounds like the Jr is somewhere in between the Dragonfly and the full sized Cally. I definitely think the full sized version is what I want. When I want something in the featherweight range I'll go to my Dragonfly,

I hope, you realize that C-54, full sized Calypso was discontinued several years ago and had blade length 4". It can take some time to find the one.
C113 Caly3 and C52 Calypso Jr. are about the same size.

By "full sized" I meant the Caly 3. I hadn't realized that there used to be a larger version. . . I'm new to the world of Spydercos.
