I guess I'm just a dusty old fart

I check several retailers new items almost daily. Usually at least 5 times a week.
I don't see a lot that interests me much at all. When I do see something interesting it's too expensive IMO. I bought a Bugout a few years back for about $120. Now it's closer to $160-170. It's not $50 better now though. Same with Spyderco. They just keep going up and up. Eventually it seems like most others buyers will reach the point I'm at now where it doesn't seem worth it anymore. I understand inflation and everything costs more now. But I'm not making 40% more than I was 2-3 years ago. They've kinda priced me out.

I am also a DOF that until about 15 years ago was a Die Hard traditional knife guy, but old age, bad nails, and hard pulls (GEC) caused me to get some linerlocks and such. Still love the slipjoints but they don't see much pocket time as I have trouble opening them.

Dusty old fart, fermented old geezer, powerlifting cutting stuff, even listening to Weezer?
The robots of the future will usurp design of knives,
But do not fear, we're still here with Barlows and Bucks in hand.

I sat upon my chair with posture of a pigeon, ogling guns and knives and lights till money was a smidgeon.
The artistry they displayed was worth provoking wives,
Though coming soon the woken boom would see they all are banned.

So while there are some humans left who exercise the craft, and art with soul is still not yet forlaft,
Get that what shoots, and fill your boots with cutting tools galore,
Before shuts the door and robots and revolutionists deny us ever more.

My name is Switters and I am a dusty old fart. I appreciate a one hand opening and closing knife when it is cold out and I am opening feed bags and cutting hay bale twine.

But my heart is with the classics, and my favorite is the one arm razor, the original fidget factor knife I suppose. Some of the more modern traditionals have caught my eye.PXL_20230223_225921994.jpg

I also like my traditional blades but being able to use a clip and the easier openomg methods I find it hard to go baack. Still prefer that thinner blades instead of these so called hard use things. Yes, Im an old fart.

I just need my knife to cut well, feel good in the hand, and be easy to maintain. A knife is a tool to me, not an object d'art. The more it looks like a human hands made it, the better. If you are a DOF like me, chime in and commiserate.
Well Spyderco knives are made to feel good in the hand.

The older I get (and I am only 45)
The more I am enjoying classic, traditional things

Slipjoints, zippos, heritage leather boots
They work and they work well without any frills or bells and whistles

But let's not pretend that innovations aren't a thing. Improvements in technology and materials is real and sometimes you really do need the improved material or technology.

Where it becomes a problem in my opinion is when people focus on change for changes sake. Not because there is a real improvement or time saving reason but to try and appear innovative or cutting edge
The trick is to keep an open enough mind to recognize real improvement and substance and ignore flash and change for its own sake.

So I carry a skeletool as my EDC because it really does have almost everything I need and nothing I don't, but I am pairing it with a 77 Barlow or a sak for some traditional soul

Just my 2 cents

Wow. What do you call that rhyme scheme?👏

I appreciate the look and history of the old school slipjoints and lockbacks. However, I am from the latter half of gen x, and have ADHD and anxiety issues, and a fidget toy that doubles as a tool is very appealing to me. I am in the mid-range of old youth as my father would say.

This made knives like the Pena X-series appealing to me, old school style with a front flipper, clip, and bearing pivot. I don't own one, they are too small for me to operate well, and I'm also done with Chinese knives. I have 6, that's plenty.

I'm really, really sick of titanium framelock knives now, especially plain ones. I'm ready for that fad to end. However, I do think some of the pattern anodized ones are cool.

OP. I’m not trying to cloud your question, but why has no one tried to do an old school style incorporating flipper tech. Rolls Royce has a road burner.
My search skills are DOF..maybe they do. I haven’t seen a flipper in stag (have I ?)

I was gifted an older, unused, well build mini griptillian from a friend, and it’s a knife I really appreciate owning. But I never carry it. Lately even my GEC’s are out of pocket as I go through another Opinel/Victorinox carrying spree.

I guess I just like simple and reliable.
