I guess I'm rough on my stuff.

Remember how I chipped the edge of my 5 on the sharpmaker rod? Yeah well I just chipped my edge again batoning a piece of wood. It cut more easily than I expected and I slammed the edge down on some rocks. Anyway these "chips" are way worse than what happened on the sharpmaker.

The thing is, I don't even care now. It's chipped, but whatever it still works. It looks like crap but so what. I guess the new is worn off and I'm ok with messing it up now. You guys have been right all along. Use it and don't worry about the little stuff.

put a piece of wood underneath whatever you're batoning next time...a used knife is a happy knife.

You ARE hard on stuff. :D You could tear up a sledgehammer head.

+1 on wood base for batoning. 1095 isn't super steel. There are much more expensive wonder steels that will chip out even easier. Take care of them when you can but most of all use them.

I definitely will use some kind of soft base next time.

I just ordered an edge pro so hopefully it will be able to work these dings out. If not then no big deal. This thing takes a beating but it keeps cutting!:D

Doesnt matter what steel your knife is made of. The base should always something that wont damage your blade.

At least you're giving your knife a beating, which is good :)

Hey Tide Shooter. Why don't ya just get a good stone. A norton and fix it in a few mins. and save a bunch of $$$??? I can't figure out why anyone uses a gaget, they work, but what a freekin hassel. Ill send ya some pics if you want so you can save $$$ and get a shaver that will do ANY blade, not just what the gagets let ya do. And yep knives love to be used:D but sharply:thumbup: have fun edgy

ESEE's are tools and meant to be used.

It's not a chip, it's a character mark.

Not much to worry about. It's a knife not a machine, it's not going to stop working. And being an ESEE-5, good luck actually doing some true damage to it.

If it still eventually bothers you, buy a second one to baby and pamper and keep this one as your workhorse.

Listen to Edgy. He's right. Get a benchstone to fix the shizzits and like shooting, beware of your backstop when chopping stuff. Knives don't like rocks.

Put your hand under the piece of wood next time. Then you will always remember to be aware of where your blade can wind up at the end of the cut. Next thing we are going to hear is you chipped your blade on your collar bone because you were chopping towards you.

Be careful man.

Don't underestimate the effectiveness of a good kitchen steel, either.

I have pushed some pretty big rolls and dents back into place on my RC-3 with nothing more than the shaft of a screwdriver.

Haha I hope y'all never hear that from me! And like another person said I probably will just buy another 5 to keep in good condition to use for more delicate tasks. This one has been used every day since I got it, so it's not pretty anymore. :)

There's a really good Bark River article on correct batoning technique.

It's always a good idea to use little taps with batoning, that way the blade doesn't get out of control and smash into rocks.

I generally don't baton all the way to the bottom of a piece of wood, just enough that I can easily pull the two pieces apart.

Hey Crimson,
I think it's great that you are using your knife and I think it's even greater that you are willing to post your mistakes hmm....no wait... "Your learning lessons" for all to read.
Using a knife is the best way to learn how to use it. Keep it up.
Just my 2cents.

Mike

Yeah, what he said. Don't take my posts wrong. I, too, think it is cool you posting about using your 5.

Thanks guys. I don't take offense to anything y'all have said, it's all been quite cordial. I'm supposed to be getting my nikon d80 back from service soon so I'll take some pictures of my well loved 5 soon and post them up. I'm loving this knife. It'll probably last me a lifetime.
