I guess my bid of $176 wasn't enough for this Jess Horn!

I placed what I thought was a supid high bid of $176 on this Jess Horn that I have been wanting but I clearly underestimated what it was worth!

This sold for over $400! I have never seen one sell on E-bay so I didn't know what the goign rate was. I was half sorry I placed such a high bid but I also knew that there would be a last second bidder like there always is on E-bay. I never expected the last second bidder would more than double my price.

I guess I can't hang with these hardcore SPyderco collectors. I was going to use it because I thought it would make a sweet EDC but even at $176, I probably wouldn't have wanted to damaged it. At $422, it is just an object taking up space in my safe. E-bay gets crazy! Great knife though!

Yeah... I noticed that knife a couple of days ago. I knew I wouldn't have enough money to put in a serious bid, but still... I had no idea it would end up selling for that much.

It's weird how collectable Spydercos have become over the last few years. I remember when those Jess Horns were on A.G. Russell's website. I think they went for around 75 or 80 dollars? In '99 or 2000, I saw a white Micarta "baby" Jess Horn on sale at SFO. I believe it was about $45 (and it wasn't a second or anything).

I love the Jess Horns but that's total insanity, IMHO. Have to wonder whether the buyer will complete the deal or whether we'll see it relisted in a couple weeks.

Wow, whoda thunk it?

I received a Spyderco/C27 from Sal Glesser back in around 2000. A friend of mine thought I needed the white Micarta model to go with it so he sent it to me, all he wanted was $50. I ran into him on chat last year and he had seen the white Micarta's selling for $150. Mine was packed away somewhere, but I thought it was time for me to break it out. It's a great little knife and I've been carrying it now for several months.

Funny thing is I've seen the C27 sell for less than $400.

That's the really bizarre part Phil. The C27, which is arguably the finest production folder ever made, rarely fetches over $300 and I can't recall ever seeing one bring $400. The micarta ones, while nicely made, are just not in the same league due to their far simpler construction. Not to mention that, at least judging by the auction photos, the one in question seems to suffer very badly from the discoloration that is common on the white micarta knives.

On the other hand, think a sprint run of ZDP-189 bladed WM Baby Horn's might sell like the proverbial hotcakes.

"What would make that price rise so fast and sharply?"

Beats me. Maybe this is one of those E-bat auctions that got out of hand. I can't say I have ever seen one listed on E-bay before so that may be part of it. I wish I had a time machine so I go back in time and buy 20 of the White micarta and 20 of the burgandy ones. From $80 to over $400 in just a few years is serious! I have not seen too many knives do that kind of jump. 500-600 percent increase in just 3-4 years? I would never have guess that!

I would love to see a sprint run of the flat ground large Jess Horns. I don't care what type of handle or steel but I think micarta and ZDP would make sense. I would buy one for use and two to save. I'm sure Spyderco has many other plans that are taking most of their time but that would be a neat item.
